Michelle Obama made a pointed remark about her husband, Barack Obama, during a recent episode of her podcast, IMO, which she co-hosts with her brother, Craig Robinson.
The former first lady said she was “so glad” she and Barack never had a son, suggesting a boy would have turned out just like his father.
The comment came up during a conversation about parenting boys with radio host Angie Martinez. Michelle, 61, shared her views on how boys should be raised, emphasizing strength and responsibility.
“People say mothers raise their girls and love their sons,” Michelle said. “And I’d say love your son, but raise him too—raise him to be as strong as you know he’s going to have to be.”
As she continued, Martinez joked that Michelle should have added a boy to the family.
Michelle quickly replied, “I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy.” When Martinez asked why not, Michelle responded, “Because he would’ve been a Barack Obama.”
Martinez laughed and suggested a “baby Barack” would have been amazing, but Michelle doubled down, saying, “Oh no, I would’ve felt for him,” per the Daily Mail.
The exchange has drawn attention amid speculation about the state of the Obamas’ 33-year marriage. Michelle was recently seen dining at an exclusive club in Mallorca with a surprising guest. Barack was not present.
Michelle has also publicly stated that she doesn’t like being addressed as “Mrs. Obama.” During a separate podcast with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, she asked to be called “Michelle,” explaining that titles can be too formal and hinder genuine conversation.
She told Rogers, “We cannot have a real conversation if you’re saying ‘Mrs. Obama,’ that’s too many syllables.” Michelle said she works to break down perceived barriers and present herself as approachable and relatable.
Adding to the individual identities within the Obama family, their eldest daughter, Malia, has dropped her last name professionally and now goes by Malia Ann. Michelle has expressed support for her daughter’s choice to pursue her own path.
Michelle has addressed marriage rumors directly. On the Diary of a CEO podcast, she stated, “If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it.”
The couple has faced speculation in part due to Michelle’s absence from several high-profile events this year, including the presidential inauguration and the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.
She also did not attend the NBA All-Star Game in March, a usual tradition for the couple. However, the two were seen on date nights in Washington, D.C., and New York City in April and May, respectively.
Michelle has been candid about personal challenges on her podcast, often discussing her experience with marriage and family life. She has said marriage is difficult but maintains that she and Barack are committed to their partnership.
She referred to Barack as “my person” and said the two are not the type to give up on their relationship. “That’s not who we are,” Michelle said, affirming their shared values.
She also revealed she’s in therapy to help navigate what she calls the “next phase” of life. As an empty nester at 60, Michelle says she’s reflecting on personal growth and reshaping her identity.
Now outside of public service, Michelle says her decisions are her own, without the obligations of children, husband, or country. Therapy, she says, is helping her let go of old habits and guilt as she focuses on her relationship with herself and her mother.
