Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) recently obtained emails exposing a concentrated Department of Justice (DOJ) effort to investigate President Donald Trump’s connection to a group of Jan. 6 defendants involved in a prisoner choir project.
The correspondence points to what some lawmakers consider a politically motivated campaign during the Biden administration.
In early March 2023, DOJ prosecutor JP Cooney circulated an email directing colleagues to “nail down Trump’s role” in the “J6 Prisoner Choir” project.
Cooney attached a Forbes article detailing Trump’s participation in recording the Pledge of Allegiance at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
The report also identified FBI Director Kash Patel and former Fox News host Ed Henry as involved in the recording.
The email, titled “J6 Prisoner Choir/DJT,” noted that profits from the song were funneled through an LLC managed by Henry.
These proceeds were earmarked to support families of jailed Jan. 6 defendants, excluding relatives of those charged with assaulting law enforcement officers, The Post Millennial reports.
Cooney instructed a colleague, likely prosecutor Ahmed Baset, to preserve relevant evidence and initiate follow-up investigations into Trump’s involvement, per the New York Post.
Baset was reportedly dismissed from the DOJ earlier this year.
The email was sent to eight DOJ personnel, including FBI Special Agent Walter Giardina.
Two days later, Giardina confirmed that she and another agent were actively working to uncover Trump’s connection to the choir.
“Esther and I are working on this today,” she wrote, promising to provide findings soon.
Grassley identified Giardina as a central figure in several high-profile and controversial investigations targeting Trump and his associates.
She was involved in the 2022 detention of former Trump advisor Peter Navarro, arrested at Reagan National Airport on contempt of Congress charges.
Giardina also played a major role in the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane probe, which alleged Trump collusion with Russia but was ultimately discredited.
Grassley raised concerns about her conduct, citing allegations she wiped data from her government-issued laptop while serving under Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Such actions could violate federal record-keeping protocols, according to TPM.
“This email chain is a clear example of the DOJ being weaponized against President Trump,” Grassley said. “Instead of focusing on fundamental law enforcement responsibilities, partisan prosecutors and agents were scouring the internet looking for anything they could use to justify yet another baseless case.”
The investigation into the Jan. 6 choir song is among multiple instances Grassley points to as evidence of excessive prosecutorial zeal by Biden-era officials.
He described it as part of an “obsession” with charging Trump despite insufficient evidence.
The emails indicate a DOJ effort that appears to extend beyond ordinary legal scrutiny and venture into politically driven pursuit, raising serious concerns about the impartiality of justice under current leadership.
Grassley has a longstanding record of exposing government corruption and misconduct, lending credibility to his criticism of the DOJ and FBI’s actions during this period, according to The Post.
As of this report, officials at the DOJ and FBI have not provided a statement regarding the leaked emails.
