Vice President JD Vance faced immediate suspension from the left-leaning social media platform Bluesky on Wednesday, marking a dramatic welcome to the X alternative that has become a haven for liberal users.
The suspension occurred just minutes after Vance created his account and shared his inaugural post on the platform.
His brief tenure on Bluesky lasted only 12 minutes before automated systems flagged his account.
Vance’s first message to Bluesky users struck an optimistic tone about political discourse.
“Hello Bluesky, I’ve been told this app has become the place to go for common sense political discussion and analysis,” he wrote.
“So I’m thrilled to be here to engage with all of you.”
The veep quickly shifted to substantive policy discussion, focusing on recent Supreme Court developments.
He referenced the court’s decision upholding Tennessee’s restrictions on so-called transgender medical treatments for minors in a 6-3 ruling.
Vance highlighted Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurrence in the case, calling it “quite illuminating.”
He included a screenshot of the conservative justice’s statement supporting the majority decision.
The vice president expanded on Thomas’s reasoning, writing that the justice “argues that many of our so-called ‘experts’ have used bad arguments and substandard science to push experimental therapies on our youth.”
Vance added his own perspective to the medical debate, stating that “many of those scientists are receiving substantial resources from big pharma to push these medicines on kids.”
He concluded his post by asking users for their thoughts on the matter.
The suspension happened swiftly after Vance announced his Bluesky presence on X.
Within 12 minutes, his account displayed a suspension message to visitors.
“Not found. Account has been suspended,” appeared on Vance’s Bluesky profile page, according to reporting by Axios journalist Marc Caputo.
The ban prevented users from accessing his content or engaging with his posts.
The suspension proved temporary, with Vance’s account restored shortly after the initial ban.
Platform administrators quickly reversed the decision and reinstated his access to the social media site, according to New York Post reporting.
Vance’s post did not appear to violate any explicit community guidelines outlined by Bluesky.
Bluesky emerged as a decentralized alternative to traditional social media after Elon Musk acquired Twitter and transformed it into X.
The platform positioned itself as offering users more control over their social media experience.
The platform experienced explosive growth following President Trump’s 2024 election victory.
User numbers tripled from 10 million to 30 million between November 2024 and May 2025, according to Pew Research Center data.
The Post outlined that liberal users migrated to Bluesky in large numbers, seeking what they perceived as a more ideologically compatible environment.
Many appeared to view the platform as an escape from the political dynamics on X under Musk’s ownership.
User reactions to Vance’s presence on the platform revealed the partisan tensions surrounding his arrival.
Some users expressed anger and frustration at the veep’s decision to join their preferred social media space.
“Don’t just block. Report the account and the posts,” one user wrote in response to Vance’s initial message.
Another user claimed they had “reported” Vance’s post “for misinformation,” despite the content focusing on publicly available Supreme Court documents and pharmaceutical industry criticism.
Bluesky officials provided a different explanation for the suspension, citing automated security measures rather than content violations.
Company representatives stated that impersonation concerns triggered the temporary ban.
“Vice President Vance’s account was briefly flagged by our automated systems that try to detect impersonation attempts which have targeted public figures like him in the past,” a Bluesky spokesperson explained.
The spokesperson added that “The account was quickly restored and verified so people can easily confirm its authenticity.”
The Post further noted that Bluesky officials also extended a formal welcome to the vice president, stating “We welcome the Vice President to join the conversation on Bluesky.”
