“UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!” was what President Trump announced on Truth Social on Tuesday afternoon. How that comes about, and if the United States will join Israel to ensure that Iran does unconditionally surrender, is now an open question that only the president can answer.
And that means that the media is now overanalyzing every single thing that happens. There’s a “doomsday plane” being moved! TRACK IT! Where are the B-2s that are capable of dropping “bunker buster” bombs? FIND THEM! The media has even pressed President Trump himself – and of course, Trump wasted no time mocking them for even asking.
President Trump on Wednesday dodged a question about whether he’s moving closer to ordering a strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.
“You don’t seriously think I’m going to answer that question. Will you strike the Iranian nuclear component?” Trump said.
“I may do it, I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do. I can tell you this, that Iran’s got a lot of trouble. And they want to negotiate. And I say why didn’t you negotiate with me before all this death and destruction.”
President Trump going for strategic ambiguity, while poking at the media, is perfectly fine, especially because it allows him to still play “good cop” while Israel pummels Iran. Israel hit again at Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, while Iran hit an Israeli hospital.
Israel attacked Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor, Iranian state television said Thursday. The report said there was “no radiation danger whatsoever” and that the facility had been already evacuated before the attack.
Israel warned earlier Thursday morning it would attack the facility and urged the public to flee the area.
Meanwhile, Israel’s main southern hospital sustained a direct hit Thursday from an Iranian missile, with officials reporting “extensive damage” there. A spokesperson for the Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheba said the hospital suffered “extensive damage” in different areas and people were wounded in the attack.
To no one’s surprise, the ayatollah is digging his heels in.
Iran’s supreme leader rejected U.S. calls for surrender in the face of more Israeli strikes Wednesday and warned that any military involvement by the Americans would cause “irreparable damage to them.” European diplomats prepared to hold talks with Iran on Friday.
The second public appearance by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei since the Israeli strikes began six days ago came as Israel lifted some restrictions on daily life, suggesting that the missile threat from Iran was easing.
Khamenei spoke a day after U.S. President Donald Trump demanded in a social media post that Iran surrender without conditions and warned Khamenei that the U.S. knows where he is but has no plans to kill him, “at least not for now.”
The refusal to surrender now leaves President Trump with a decision to make. Does he authorize the use of B-2 bombers to drop a “bunker buster” on the nuclear facility at Fordow – which is deep underground, and the Israeli Air Force does not have the aircraft to lift a “bunker buster,” even if we did sell them one or two – or not? It seems that Trump is taking his time to consider all the available options – which is a GOOD thing. But reportedly, one of his concerns is that if the B-2 is used, it won’t work. Diplomatically, this is a one-shot deal – and the president wants a guarantee that the bombs will do the job.
Trump has specifically asked his military advisers whether the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) would destroy Fordow, a U.S. official said.
Pentagon officials told Trump they’re confident it would, according to the official. But it’s not clear Trump was totally convinced.
MOPs have never been used on the battlefield, though they went through several tests during development, current and former U.S. officials say.
“The bunker buster will work. It’s not a capabilities issue. We have the capability. But there’s an entire plan (for a possible attack). It’s not just drop a bunker buster and declare victory,” another top U.S. official said.
“The end game for us is simple: no nuke,” that official said. “It may be different for the Israelis. And we would be willing to, if it’s within reason, go in there and do a surgical strike — maybe, if necessary” and if the president considers it “logical and effective,” the official said.
Obviously, with full control of the airspace above Iran, dropping a MOP would be an easy thing to do – and would be much simpler than one of the other options Israel has apparently considered, which is a commando raid. Fordow – which is buried deep underground and reinforced – is now the main target for anyone wishing to stop or severely hobble Iran’s nuclear ambitions. At the time Fordow’s existence was made public in 2009, even then-President Obama said that “the size and configuration of this facility is inconsistent with a peaceful program.” President Trump would like Iran to surrender and give up Fordow through a deal. At this point, the mullahs have point-blank refused.
Could Trump sell a MOP or two to Israel, and then allow them to “rent” a B-2 in some kind of Uber delivery situation? Maybe. Would Iran see that as the United States “crossing the line”? Definitely. If Trump gives the green light to the supposedly drawn up attack plans (per the Wall Street Journal, the plans exist and have been approved by the president), he understandably wants to make sure that Iran has very little or nothing to use to strike back with, and that Fordow would be unreachable and unuseable. These are the decisions that lay solely with the commander-in-chief, and it looks like the American people agree with his premise that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.
Trump’s actual positions (vs the strawmen many are arguing against) are enormously popular with Americans outside the online influencer bubble. https://t.co/9FMnZFvbnZ

President Trump has said his patience is “wearing thin.” The question is, how much thinner will his patience get before he makes a move? I think once the decision is made, whatever it is, he will stand by it. It’s the lead up to the decision that is the hard part – and the not knowing what happens after.
