‘Gold Bar Bob’ now has a new home behind bars. Former Democratic Senator Bob Menendez reported to a Pennsylvania federal prison on Tuesday to begin serving his 11-year sentence for corruption after judges rejected his desperate last-minute attempts to avoid incarceration.
At a glance:
• Former Democratic Senator Bob Menendez has begun serving an 11-year prison sentence for bribery and corruption
• FBI agents found $480,000 in cash and gold bars worth $150,000 in his home
• Menendez was convicted of acting as a foreign agent for Egypt and accepting bribes
• The 71-year-old politician is being held at Schuylkill federal correctional institution in Pennsylvania

Corruption Ends Political Career
The fall of the once-powerful Democrat marks the end of a decades-long political career tarnished by serious criminal charges. Menendez was convicted of multiple charges including extortion, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt – and he just reported to prison to serve his 11-year sentence.
FBI agents discovered a treasure trove of corruption evidence during their investigation of the New Jersey politician. They found $480,000 in cash hidden throughout his home, some stuffed in boots and jacket pockets, along with gold bars worth approximately $150,000 and a luxury convertible.
Senator Turned Foreign Agent
Prosecutors successfully proved that Menendez performed corrupt favors for New Jersey business owners in exchange for the bribes. His criminal activities included protecting them from investigations, facilitating business deals with foreign entities, and meeting with Egyptian intelligence officials.

The most damning evidence showed Menendez helped Egypt access $300 million in U.S. military aid as part of his corrupt arrangement. Two business owners, Fred Daibes and Wael Hana, were also convicted alongside Menendez and received seven and eight-year prison sentences respectively.

Democrat Leadership Abandons Menendez
After the guilty verdict, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer quickly distanced himself from Menendez. “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” Schumer stated.
Menendez, who had served in the Senate since 2006 and once chaired the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was forced to resign following his conviction. His wife Nadine Menendez was also convicted of accepting bribes and is currently awaiting her own sentencing.
Despite his crimes, Menendez has continued to proclaim his innocence while simultaneously aligning himself with President Donald Trump. Reports indicate the disgraced Democrat is hoping for a potential pardon from Trump – but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.
Menendez is now being held at the Schuylkill federal correctional institution in Minersville, Pennsylvania. The facility includes both a medium-security prison and a minimum-security prison camp, though it remains unclear which section houses the 71-year-old former senator.
