Details emerge
According to the Oscars’ official website:
The Governors Awards is an annual event celebrating awards conferred by the Academy’s Board of Governors — the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Honorary Award. Recipients are announced each summer and honored at a dinner gala. Highlights from the event are incorporated into the year’s Academy Awards show.
The purpose of the Academy Honorary Awards is to commemorate “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences in any discipline, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”
Parton will also receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize the recipient’s dedication to “promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities.”
“Parton exemplifies the spirit of…”
Academy president Janet Yang has released a statement on the award.
She said:
Debbie Allen is a trailblazing choreographer and actor, whose works has captivated generations and crossed genres. Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all.
Yang went on to explain why Parton was selected to receive the award, saying, “Beloved performer Dolly Parton exemplifies the spirit of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award through her unwavering dedication to charitable efforts.”
The Dollywood Foundation
In case you are unfamiliar with Parton’s humanitarian efforts, The Hill provides the details.
It explains:
The actor and songwriter — who garnered Oscar nominations in the best original song category in 1981 and 2006 but never won — is the founder of the Dollywood Foundation. She launched her literacy program, ‘Imagination Library,’ in 1995.
The program’s own website states, “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family’s income.”
Parton, on the website, writes:
Before he passed away, my Daddy told me the Imagination Library was probably the most important thing I had ever done. I can’t tell you how much that meant to me because I created the Imagination Library as a tribute to my Daddy. He was the smartest man I have ever known but I know in my heart his inability to read probably kept him from fulfilling all of his dreams.
Congratulations, Dolly!
