Oxnard Mayor Pro Tem Gabe Teran announced a phone number for residents to report and receive updates on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in the area during a council meeting on Tuesday.
The initiative, met with some applause and laughter from attendees, aims to support the city’s illegal immigrant community amid heightened fears of federal immigration enforcement.
“The 805 Immigrant Rapid Response Hotline allows residents to report and stay informed about ICE activities in our communities,” Teran said, sharing the hotline number.
Operated by 805 UndocuFund, a local nonprofit funded by community donors, the hotline provides financial assistance to undocumented immigrants and disseminates real-time updates on ICE operations.
Teran’s announcement comes as Oxnard grapples with growing unease over recent ICE raids, including a widely publicized operation by the Department of Homeland Security targeting agricultural workers. On June 16, tensions escalated when Juan Ramirez Diaz, a U.S. citizen and Oxnard resident, was detained by ICE while recording his father’s arrest. Ramirez Diaz and his legal team allege he was subjected to excessive force, including being “maced, punched, and beaten” by agents.
Oxnard’s city council expressed unified support for the community during the town hall, emphasizing that local police do not cooperate with ICE under California’s Senate Bill 54, known as the “sanctuary state” law. The 2017 legislation restricts local agencies from using resources to assist federal immigration enforcement.
“Go to the grocery store. Go to the bank. Go anywhere in a public setting, and you might notice a significant decrease in foot traffic, and people out and about, then there was just a couple of weeks ago,” Teran said.
Teran highlighted the broader impact of ICE’s presence, warning of “ripple effects and consequences” that could unfold in unforeseen ways. ICE has not issued a public statement regarding its recent activities in Oxnard
