A respected British film director was found brutally murdered in her London home, sparking a full-scale homicide investigation and a hunt for her missing diamond-encrusted Rolex.
Jennifer Abbott, 69, who worked professionally under the name Sarah Steinberg, was discovered dead in her Camden home on June 13. The Metropolitan Police confirmed she had been stabbed and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say she was last seen walking her beloved pet Corgi on June 10.
According to a post-mortem carried out two days later, Abbott died of sharp force trauma. Her body was reportedly discovered by her niece, who grew concerned after not hearing from her for several days. A neighbor told BBC News that the niece pleaded for help before the door was forced open.
“My son broke the door down,” one neighbor recalled. “We heard her niece shouting, ‘Somebody help me, somebody help.’ Then we saw her screaming, ‘Oh my God, she’s been murdered.’”
Abbott’s body was found wrapped in a blanket on her bed, with tape over her mouth—adding a chilling layer to what authorities now believe may have been a targeted robbery. Her Corgi, incredibly, had survived after being locked in the bathroom without food or water for three days.
Detectives are especially focused on a Rolex watch that has vanished from Abbott’s home. Described as having a distinctive diamond-encrusted face, police believe it may be the motive behind the killing. However, they are still keeping an open mind.
Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart urged the public to come forward with any information. “Someone must have seen or heard something. No piece of information is too small,” he said. “It could be the crucial clue that leads us to identify Jennifer’s murderer.”
Abbott was known for her 2010 documentary War of the Gods, which explored themes of religion and belief. She frequently attended film events and mingled with Hollywood stars, as seen in social media posts featuring her with Kate Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, and Paris Hilton.
The Times reports that Abbott had recently been diagnosed with stomach cancer and may have undergone surgery not long before her death.
As of now, no arrests have been made. Police have increased patrols in the area and are urging anyone with knowledge of the crime—or the whereabouts of the missing Rolex—to come forward.
