Disgraced former R&B star R. Kelly was rushed to a hospital after suffering a dangerous medication overdose while in solitary confinement.
Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, filed an emergency motion on June 10, claiming that the singer’s life is at risk due to unsafe prison conditions and the denial of critical medical care amid the overdose, as the Daily Wire reports.
A once-celebrated artist, Kelly has been in federal custody since 2022 multiple convictions. The overdose occurred when Bureau of Prisons officials administered an excessive dose of medication.
Kelly relies on medication for anxiety, sleep issues, and other unspecified health conditions. “Bureau of Prisons officials administered an amount of medication that significantly exceeded a safe dose and caused Mr. Kelly to overdose, putting his life in jeopardy,” Brindley said.
Legal push for release
Brindley filed an emergency motion on June 10 to move Kelly to house arrest. The attorney argues that Kelly’s life remains in danger while he is held in federal custody.
“He is not safe in federal custody,” Brindley stated, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Kelly requires urgent surgery to address blood clots in his lungs, according to his attorney. Brindley claims the prison is preventing Kelly from receiving this necessary medical procedure.
“Mr. Kelly’s life is in jeopardy right now because the Bureau of Prisons denied him necessary surgery to clear clots from his lungs,” Brindley said.
Harsh prison conditions cited
Kelly has been in solitary confinement since the emergency motion was filed on June 10. Brindley argues that keeping Kelly in prison under these conditions constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.
“He could die from this condition, and they are letting it happen. There is no legitimate explanation for that,” Brindley said.
Brindley is seeking a presidential pardon for Kelly and claims to have contacted individuals connected to President Donald Trump. Kelly once lived in Trump Tower, though no other relationship with Trump is known.
“And to keep him in prison while he is under threat like this is cruel and unusual punishment,” Brindley said.
Kelly’s legal troubles persist
In 2022, a federal jury found Kelly guilty on three of four counts of child pornography. These charges carried a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Kelly was also convicted on three of five counts of enticement of a minor for criminal sexual activity in the same year. Before the 2022 convictions, Kelly faced legal consequences in New York.
In 2022, he was convicted on all nine counts of racketeering and sex trafficking. At the time of the second guilty verdict, Kelly was already serving a 30-year sentence from the New York case.
