This is the second installment of my series on failed health inspections at Planned Parenthood.
This series is based on the page Problems at Planned Parenthood, put together by me and Rachel MacNair, which uses lawsuits, failed health inspections, negative reviews, and other information to reveal how flawed Planned Parenthood is.
In my previous article, I shared how Planned Parenthood in Glendale, Arizona, had failed at least six inspections.
One of the many problems revealed in those inspections was that staff weren’t properly sterilizing instruments.

The device used to sterilize abortion instruments is called an autoclave. In Glendale, the autoclave wasn’t being properly maintained.
This was also the case at two other Planned Parenthood facilities in Arizona. This means that in at least three of Arizona’s Planned Parenthood abortion clinics, staff weren’t properly sterilizing instruments—risking spreading infections between patients.
These are just the cases that we know of.
Tempe Planned Parenthood
The Planned Parenthood facility in Tempe failed at least two inspections, both in 2014. Here were the violations:
The autoclave, used to sterilize the instruments, was required to be cleaned weekly. However, the last documented cleaning was nearly three months prior to the inspection. Staff couldn’t verify the autoclave had been cleaned more recently than that.
The clinic staff failed to monitor how many cycles the autoclave was running. This was supposed to be done automatically by a printout attached to the machine. However, the paper in the printer had run out and hadn’t been replaced.
All of these problems with the autoclave meant that surgical instruments weren’t being properly sterilized. Planned Parenthood, therefore, could have been spreading infections.
Didn’t have a policy for the use, cleaning, and preventive maintenance of certain equipment used on patients, such as heating pads.
The facility appeared to be using an irrigation solution (Braun 0.9% Sodium Chloride) that, by the manufacturer’s standards, should’ve been discarded.
Here are links to the inspection reports.
Flagstaff Planned Parenthood
The Flagstaff Planned Parenthood facility failed an inspection in 2016.
The inspection found:
The facility failed to properly sterilize instruments and textiles that “may come in contact with a patients’ blood and internal tissue.” Using unsterilized, dirty instruments on multiple women has the potential to spread infection.
