For the first time in over a year, Border Patrol agents released no illegal immigrants into the United States during the month of May, marking a 93 percent drop from the same month last year under the Biden administration.
In May 2024, approximately 62,000 illegal immigrants were released into the U.S. interior by federal authorities following encounters at the southern border.
One year later, the number dropped to zero. Border Patrol agents apprehended 8,725 individuals attempting to cross the southern border in May 2025, but none were released into the country.
The sharp decline in releases has been credited to the policies of President Donald Trump’s administration.
Acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Pete Flores emphasized the operational support and policy shift under the current administration.
“Under the leadership of this administration, CBP has received historic support resulting in another 93% decrease in illegal crossings along the southwest border this month when compared with last year,” Flores told the New York Post.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) responded to the report on social media, writing, “PROMISES MADE, PROMISES KEPT. Another CLEAR example of strong, America First Leadership by @POTUS.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) echoed the praise, contrasting the figures between the current and previous administrations.
“Trump – 0. Biden – 64,000. Incredible. THIS is what real leadership looks like on the border,” Abbott posted.
The change reflects a broader policy reversal from the Biden administration, which had released most illegal immigrants after they crossed the southern border.
Under Biden, these individuals often secured employment to repay smuggling debts and encouraged further immigration, Breitbart News reports.
In contrast, the Trump administration has shifted to detaining illegal immigrants upon apprehension, a move that officials say disrupts smuggling networks and deters additional crossings.
Former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan criticized the previous administration’s release policy and highlighted the intentional nature of the practice.
“Why did they release people into the interior United States rather than put them into an ICE bed?” he said in an April interview with Breitbart. “Why not put them in an empty ICE bed, $127 a night, rather than a hotel at 500 bucks a night?”
He continued, “They did it on purpose, because you put them in ICE detention bed, they get a hearing in 35 days. Court records show nine out of ten people claim asylum, get order removal, they’re gone.”
Homan argued that extended release timelines under the Biden administration allowed illegal immigrants to remain in the U.S. for years while awaiting hearings, potentially until a future Democratic administration could grant mass amnesty.
Breitbart also reported in early May that illegal immigrant apprehensions had already dropped by nearly 13 percent from March to April and over 95 percent compared to the same month in the previous year.
Flores emphasized the contrast, saying the administration’s actions have been decisive in regaining control of the border.
The data from May reflects a continued downward trend in illegal crossings and releases since Trump took office.
