President Donald Trump was up north this week, as he headed to Canada over the weekend for the big G7 conference, which is about as big a waste of time as it gets.
When reports surfaced that Iranians were fleeing Tehran due to increased Israeli attacks, it gave Trump the excuse he needed to leave town.
Trump cut the visit short by days, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled a planned trip to the Middle East in favor of a strategy session with the president.
Time to go
My readers know how I feel about that G7 conference, which is nothing more than elected officials slapping each other on the back, having a great vacation, traveling by private jet, then lecturing everyone on the planet about carbon emissions.
There is usually some ridiculous non-binding resolution announced just as everyone is headed home.
Trump actually did accomplish something on this trip, however, as it was reported that he had another trade agreement signed, although it literally almost blew away in the wind.
On Monday, Trump announced, “I have to be back,” referencing his imminent return to D.C.
He continued, “You probably see what I see. And I have to be back as soon as I can.”
Reports further claimed that Trump put our National Security Council on alert to be ready to meet as soon as he returned.
While there are serious concerns about the United States dipping its toes into this conflict, for now, we are holding a defensive posture. While it is true that we do have warships moving in place, I believe that is more about defending Israel than taking an offensive stance.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also commented on the situation, stating, “What you’re watching in real time is peace through strength and America first. Our job is to be strong. We are postured defensively in the region to be strong in pursuit of a peace deal.”
He went on, “My job as the secretary of defense is to ensure that our people are safe and that we’re strong so that we can set the conditions for a deal. And President Trump’s made it clear it’s on the table. The question is whether Iran will take it.”
I really want this situation to be resolved rather quickly. I hate to say it, but I am just not comfortable with Hegseth as a wartime secretary of Defense. My gut tells me that Trump will have Israel back off, at least for a bit, to see if we can get a diplomatic deal done.
Iran is conducting random strikes against Israel, while Israel is taking out its opponent’s leadership, so I don’t know how many more strikes Tehran can withstand before chaos erupts.
Iran has to know it has no leverage here, as the likes of China and Russia are not going to throw hands with the United States if we decide to step in to defend Israel, but as I have stated before, that should only be a last resort.
