According to a number of recent reports, the Trump administration wants to meet with Iran’s leadership this week to address its nuclear program and the possibility — albeit an increasingly diminished one — of a truce with Israel.
Axios has cited four sources that confirm the White House’s proposal for a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Ambassador Steve Witkoff.
The meeting would focus on a nuclear deal and ending the war between Israel and Iran.
“A meeting with the Iranians this week is under consideration,” a U.S. official told Axios.
Although the meeting has not been officially confirmed, it has been suggested as part of President Donald Trump’s desire to reach a diplomatic agreement.
Details emerge
A senior U.S. official told Axios that Trump plans to keep the use of bunker buster bombs on the table as a means to destroy Iran’s “underground enrichment facility at Fordow” (which the U.S. has but Israel does not) in order to pressure Tehran into a nuclear agreement.
Trump “thinks in terms of deals and leverage,” the official told the publication, “Describing the decision on bunker busters as an ‘inflection point.'”
The outlet continued by saying that Trump has made it clear that Iran cannot attain nuclear weapons under any circumstances, even though he is hesitant to help Israel in its attacks on Iran.
The senior official went on to say that the administration is not sure if Iran has “been brought to their knees fully so that they realize that in order to have a country, they have to talk… ” despite its leaders’ apparent eagerness to start negotiations.
Trump holds firm
As Breitbart News previously reported, the president also rejected “the G7’s proposed statement on Iran because it called for monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities, rather than an outright halt to Iran’s program of nuclear enrichment.”
Given that uranium enrichment beyond a certain point serves no use other than producing the unique isotope required for nuclear bombs, the Trump administration has been pressuring Iran to end all enrichment activities.
Due to Iran’s refusal to move on the issue, nuclear discussions have ground to a halt, and last Friday, Israel attacked Iran to appease Tehran and prevent the threat of an Iranian nuclear weapon.
Reportedly, the president also turned down a deal that would have allowed for Iran’s uranium enrichment program, provided strict monitoring of the country’s nuclear sites occurred.
