A chilling discovery in Japan has reignited a long-cold missing persons case — and led to the arrest of a 31-year-old man now accused of a gruesome murder.
Authorities in Saitama have arrested Jun Saito after human remains, including a woman’s skull, were found inside his apartment. Police have confirmed the skull belongs to 21-year-old Kaho Miyamoto, who vanished more than six years ago after traveling to meet Saito.
Miyamoto was last seen on January 4, 2018, at JR Omiya Station, where she met Saito in person. The two reportedly returned to his residence in Omiya Ward, where police now say she was murdered and dismembered.
The case took a dark turn on May 15 when Saito was arrested on suspicion of stealing a woman’s smartphone. During a search of his apartment, investigators discovered two skulls and additional human bones placed on a shelf. One skull was identified as Miyamoto’s; the other, disturbingly, is believed to have been purchased online.
Authorities also found an assortment of saws, knives, and other tools at the scene — all believed to have been used in the dismemberment.
According to Japanese news outlet The Mainichi, Saito has confessed to the murder, reportedly telling police: “I invited her to my home, strangled her, and dismembered her body at my home. I strangled her with a rope.”
The motive, according to the suspect’s own chilling words, appears to be deeply disturbing. “I’ve had a murderous desire since I was a child. I wanted to kill someone,” he allegedly said in his confession, as reported by Japan Today. “I’m sure I did it with her consent. There was no other reason.”
Investigators also allege that Miyamoto had been experiencing suicidal thoughts at the time of her disappearance and that Saito asked her to write a suicide note before removing the SIM card from her phone.
In a heartbreaking statement, Miyamoto’s family expressed their shock and grief. “We can’t believe it, and we don’t want to believe it,” the family said Monday. “She was a kind, earnest girl who was considerate of the feelings of those around her. For now, our family would like to quietly mourn our daughter.”
