Another past lawmaker has found himself on the wrong side of a corruption ruling.
Michael Madigan, a former Democrat legislator in Illinois, was found guilty on 10 of the 23 charges he faced.
He has since been sentenced to seven years in prison for his crimes.
Lock him up
Madigan is the former speaker of the state legislature in Illinois, and he was also the longest-serving state house leader in history.
Just prior to sentencing, he was hoping the court would offer some leniency, with his attorneys asking for five years’ probation.
Madigan stated, “I’m truly sorry for putting the people of the state of Illinois through this.”
He went on, “I tried to do my best to serve the people of the state of Illinois. I am not perfect.”
U.S. District Judge John Robert Blakey showed little empathy for the 83-year-old disgraced Democrat, telling him, “Being great is hard. Being honest is not. It’s hard to commit crimes. It actually takes effort.”
Judge Blakey added, “You lied. You did not have to. You had a right to sit there and exercise your right to silence. But you took the stand and you took the law into your own hands.”
Madigan should consider himself lucky because he was facing more than 100 years in jail.
Now, with good behavior, he may just make it out of prison alive, an option to which I do not believe he should be entitled.
My best guess here is that his family and supporters will make a plea to Donald Trump to have his sentence commuted or given an outright pardon due to his age and a sickly wife at home.
If you read my posts regularly, you know I put corrupt public officials right up there with pedophile priests.
I do not take kindly to public figures who abuse their power, influence, and trust to take advantage of people, and that is what Madigan was doing here.
I would love to see him take his last breath on this earth looking through bars, and if that makes me cold and heartless, so be it, but corrupt elected officials need to learn a hard lesson.
You violate our trust, you deserve whatever punishment comes your way.
Having said all that, I am very worried that Trump will let him off the hook, given his notable history of pardoning corrupt public officials. I can tell you flat out that if I were Madigan, I would start talking about the system being weaponized and get Trump’s attention for a Hail Mary pardon.
