A tight-knit Nashville community is reeling after the tragic death of a well-loved high school teacher and mother of two, who police say was killed in a murder-suicide by her husband over the weekend.
Amina “Anna” Pierce, 30, a biology teacher and tennis coach at Hunters Lane High School, was found shot dead alongside her 46-year-old husband Steven Pierce inside their home on June 15, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
Officers were responding to a call about a possible shooting when they discovered both Anna and Steven with fatal gunshot wounds inside their condo. A revolver was recovered from underneath Steven’s body, and investigators believe he shot Anna before turning the weapon on himself.
Police say the couple had been arguing about divorce and financial struggles in the moments leading up to the tragedy. However, authorities confirmed there had never been any previous domestic disturbance reports at their address.
Anna’s death has left colleagues, students, and loved ones devastated. The Metro Nashville School District released a statement calling her a “beloved biology teacher and tennis coach” who had dedicated her career to helping young people thrive.
“She enjoyed teaching biology and 9th graders because she believed in the power of strong relationships to carry students through to graduation and beyond,” said Dr. Sue Kessler, the principal at Hunters Lane High School.
Anna had spent seven years at the school, coaching tennis and supporting fellow teachers as they juggled the demands of parenting and education. She was also working toward her principal licensure at the time of her death, determined to take on a larger leadership role within the school system.
“We will miss Ms. Pierce’s commitment to kids, love of our school, and her dedication,” Dr. Kessler added. “Our thoughts are with the many people who loved her.”
Anna leaves behind two young daughters. Tributes online have poured in from students, co-workers, and parents, who remembered her as a passionate educator and kind-hearted mother who made a lasting impact on everyone around her.
