A family tragedy was caught on a home security camera as parents had no regard for their two-year-old child playing with a loaded firearm.
What appeared to be a casual evening at home suddenly turned into a crime scene Friday night in Rio Verde de Mato Grosso. In the Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazilian town, a young boy’s preventable play with a loaded 9mm handgun resulted in him fatally shooting his own mother.
Captured on the home security footage shared by Telefuturo, 27-year-old Deborah Rodrigues Monteiro could be seen glancing at her child after he picked up the gun, but paying little attention to him as she instead continued a conversation with her husband, seen lounging with his feet up.
Within moments of the toddler picking up the weapon, he had pointed it at his mother and pulled the trigger before immediately dropping the gun and running to her as both Rodrigues Monteiro sprang up from her chair, clutching her arm.

Only after she turned to show her husband, confirmed by MS Notícias to be 56-year-old Armando Hartmann, did the man react to the dramatic scene unfolding before him. It was then that the woman began to suffer the impact of the bullet that had passed through her arm before entering her chest.
While the boy ran, Rodrigues Monteiro began to stumble, collapsing in front of a nearby slide as the child then came back to her. At the same time, Hartmann could be seen racing to pick up the weapon and hurriedly heading out of frame.
According to G1, the husband returned to attempt to aid his wife after first responders had been summoned. Deputy Danielle Felismino confirmed Rodrigues Monteiro was transported to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
“In view of the family tragedy, and out of caution, he will be heard again next week,” said Felismino, according to G1. She added that, if necessary, the case would be forwarded to the Guardianship Council to determine custody of the child, who was expected to remain with family for the time being.
As it was, testimony from Hartmann reported by Capital News conveyed that he had not seen the toddler pick up the weapon and play with it for the roughly 15 seconds before the fatal shot was fired. In addition to facing a manslaughter charge for the death of his wife, the husband is also subject to the Disarmament Statute, which requires all firearms to be guarded and kept out of the reach of children.
“A lack of care in guarding weapons can provoke tragedies like this,” the authorities said. If convicted, Hartmann faces two years’ detention and a fine just for the firearms violation.
