A post from Hillary Clinton mocking President Donald Trump’s tribute to the U.S. military ignited a firestorm online, with conservatives accusing her of disrespecting the armed forces and reigniting memories of past controversies.
Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, marked the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
After brief showers earlier in the day, clear skies returned just in time for the full military display, which featured aerial flyovers, parachute jumps and a fireworks conclusion.
Clinton responded by sharing images from the celebration alongside photos of protests in Los Angeles, part of a series of liberal-led rallies dubbed “No Kings Day.”
“Compare and contrast scenes from yesterday in America. On the one hand, Trump’s low-energy Dear Leader parade (that cost you $45 million). On the other, millions of people across the country gathering peacefully to say: Here, we have no kings,” she wrote on X.
The phrase “Dear Leader”—often ”associated with North Korean authoritarianism—sparked outrage among many who viewed her remarks as a swipe at military personnel.
Social media users, many of them veterans or conservative commentators, quickly criticized the former Secretary of State.
“Hillary Clinton is an evil woman,” wrote Gunther Eagleman.
“Hillary Clinton hates the troops, bigtime,” Eric Daughtery wrote.
Benny Johnson added, “This witch was a few votes away from becoming commander in chief. This is what she thinks of our military.”
Another user wrote, “Hillary Clinton spits on the US military.”
Fueling the backlash further, Clinton restricted replies to her tweet—a move that critics said underscored her unwillingness to face public criticism.
Some used the moment to bring up her role in the 2012 Benghazi attack during her time as secretary of state under former President Barack Obama.
“Yes!! Remember Benghazi,” one user commented.
The GOP-led House Benghazi committee, which released an 800-page report in 2016, accused Clinton and the Obama administration of misleading the public and called her use of a private email server “shameful.”
The report stated that officials privately acknowledged the cause of the attacks while publicly blaming other factors, according to the Daily Mail.
Clinton’s critics also recalled a controversial statement from her 2016 campaign, when she labeled half of Trump supporters as belonging in a “basket of deplorables.”
Speaking at an LGBT fundraiser in New York, she described them as “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic.”
She later walked back the remarks, saying she regretted making them in such “grossly generalistic” terms and admitted, “That’s never a good idea.”
Her recent post, however, renewed claims that she still harbors contempt for those who support Trump or embrace military traditions.
“She hates our country. We are deplorables,” one user responded.
As of Monday, Clinton had not addressed the criticism or clarified her remarks about the Army event.
The U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary ceremony was one of several commemorations taking place nationwide, but it was the celebration in Washington that drew the most attention—both for its scale and for the political storm it triggered online.
