In a horrific act of violence on Saturday, a masked man, said to be posing as a police officer, is accused of fatally shooting a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband and also of shooting and seriously wounding another legislator and his spouse.
Now, a man described as the suspect’s good friend and roommate has stepped forward to share what he says is the final text message he received from Vance Boelter, the presumed assassin who is the subject of a continued manhunt, as the New York Post reports.
Text message revealed
David Carlson, a longtime close friend of Boelter, emerged on Saturday to detail the contents of a text message he received at roughly 6 a.m., not long after the crimes at issue were perpetrated.
According to Carlson, the message — that was also sent to another friend — was foreboding and mysterious in nature.
“David and Ren, I love you guys. I made some choices, and you guys don’t know anything about this, but I’m going to be gone for a while,” Boelter began. The communication continued, “May be dead shortly, so I just want to let you know I love you guys both and I wish it hadn’t gone this way.”
Boelter went on, “I don’t want to say anything more and implicate you in any way because you guys don’t know anything about this. But I love you guys and I’m sorry for all the trouble this has caused.”
As soon as he read the message, Carlson said he contacted authorities, worried that his friend had harmed himself.
Nebulous background emerges
Attempting to offer the media some insight into the man he knew, Carlson explained that he met Boelter decades ago when the two were in fourth grade, and he was incredulous at the notion that his friend could have taken part in such violence.
Carlson observed, “He wasn’t a hateful person, but he needed help.”
Boelter’s employment history appeared disjointed and erratic, and that he had hit hard financial times of late.
“He was looking around, but maybe things didn’t work out and he just gave up and decided to go out in a blaze of glory. I have no idea what he was thinking,” Carlson added.
Given that the targets of Boelter’s attack were Democrat lawmakers, Carlson was asked to weigh in on his friend’s politics, to which he replied that he had voted for Donald Trump, but said he was less certain of his positions when it came to state issues.
Contentious recent vote prompts questions
Rep. Melissa Hortman, killed in the attack, recently made headlines for being the sole Democrat in the Minnesota legislature to side with Republicans in removing illegal immigrants from a state health care program, a decision that left her visibly shaken and emotional in an interview conducted at the time.
Whether that stance — a highly controversial one within the ranks of her party — played a role in triggering Boelter’s rampage still remains unknown as the investigation into this needless tragedy continues to unfold.
