A horrific family dispute in Alabama ended in double tragedy when a man allegedly shot and killed his mother—only to be gunned down moments later by his own brother, police said.
Authorities in Auburn responded to a shooting around 5:39 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, and found 52-year-old Traci McDuffie and her 25-year-old son, Brandon McDuffie, both dead inside the home, according to a statement from the Mobile Police Department.
Investigators say the violence started with a heated argument between Traci and Brandon that turned deadly. Brandon reportedly pulled a gun on his mother and fatally shot her. Not long after, his older brother Brent McDuffie, 32, arrived at the scene and discovered what had happened.
According to police, Brandon then opened fire at Brent, who returned fire—killing him.
“There was some sort of communication to let the other son know,” said MPD spokesperson Blake Brown, who added that Brent acted in self-defense when his younger brother aimed the weapon at him.
Brandon’s death will be reviewed by a grand jury, the department confirmed, while the investigation into Traci’s death has officially been closed due to the circumstances.
So far, no charges have been announced against Brent.
The shocking incident has left the local community reeling. In a Facebook post, the First Baptist Church of Baltimore Street identified Brent as Traci’s eldest son and asked followers to “please continue to lift Brother Brent McDuffie and the family up in prayer during their time of bereavement.”
The church also shared plans for a celebration of life service for the family on Saturday, June 21.
Loved ones remembered Traci as a warm and generous soul. “An exceptionally kind individual who will truly be missed,” one family friend wrote on Facebook. Her sister also shared a tribute online, saying, “There is nothing bad that can be said about her. She was a hard worker and loved her live music.”
The Mobile Police Department has not issued further comment as of Saturday, June 14.
