Federal agencies during the Biden administration were spying on Elon Musk through two years, 2022 and 2023, watching who was visiting Musk, particularly from outside the country. The story, first reported by Wall Street Journal (WSJ), comes as a reminder of state surveillance aimed at political targets.
Daily Mail published its story on June 10, based off the WSJ report, to name the agencies active in spying on Musk during the Biden presidency – the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Justice Department (DOJ). These agencies were focused on tracking foreign nationals visiting Musk at any of his properties, and particularly on visitors from Eastern Europe as well as other “unspecified places”.
The story cited “insiders” from the pro-Trump Super PAC and the Trump campaign, who are familiar with the matter, telling that Musk was connected to too many foreign nationals and it even made the Trump camp uneasy at times.
And even when Musk was seen favorably by the president, insiders said Musk’s proximity to a number of foreign nationals was a source of tension within Trump’s White House.
Musk was also harassed by the Biden administration’s Federal Trade Commission (FTC) after he purchased Twitter. In March 2023, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton appeared on Fox News to comment on FTC demanding that Twitter should turn over records of internal communication including the list of the journalists who posted the Twitter Files. Fitton opined that these efforts of a gangster government were part of its censorship agenda.
The timing of Biden admin’s spying on Musk seems to coincide with Musk’s acquisition of Twitter from its former liberal ownership that targeted conservatives to a free speech platform where politically incorrect reporting and opinion was allowed. Musk started the process of acquiring Twitter in April 2022 and completed it in October that year. Thus the reports that the deep state started spying on Musk to see if he was being influenced by foreign forces translate into domestic political surveillance of the rich and popular tech billionaire who was openly aligning with the conservatives.
The current administration’s DHS and DOJ have not commented on the status of these spying practices targeting Musk during the Biden years. This could mean that the surveillance ended and presented some official report on conclusion, or it may still be open. Since Musk enjoys top-secret security clearance through the SpaceX program, the matter could still affect Musk. As Newsweek wrote (June 10):
If DHS, DOJ, or the Department of Defense determine that Musk’s relationships pose a security risk, his top-secret clearance could be reassessed.
