In a bold preemptive strike dubbed “Operation Rising Lion,” Israeli forces delivered a profound blow to Iran’s military leadership, eliminating two of the regime’s most prominent generals. General Hossein Salami, the firebrand commander-in-chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was among the casualties. Appointed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 2019, shortly after President Trump wisely withdrew from the disastrous Iran nuclear deal and designated the IRGC a terrorist organization, Salami embodied Iran’s defiance toward global peace and security.

Under Salami’s tenure, the IRGC expanded its destructive influence far beyond Iran’s borders, supporting terrorist factions in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Gaza. Salami’s forces controlled Iran’s formidable ballistic missile arsenal, a constant threat aimed squarely at Israel and American interests in the region. Indeed, during the Israel-Hamas conflict, Salami directly oversaw missile strikes targeting our staunch ally, Israel—actions that could not go unanswered.

Salami’s militaristic bravado was matched only by his relentless hostility. Following America’s justified elimination of Qassem Soleimani—a terrorist mastermind who orchestrated deadly attacks on U.S. forces—Salami vowed revenge. He soon followed through, launching missile barrages against U.S. bases in Iraq. His repeated threats of annihilating Israel underscored the persistent menace Iran posed to regional stability. Removing Salami from the battlefield permanently weakens Tehran’s strategic capacity and sends a clear message to its remaining military leaders: aggression will carry dire consequences.

Equally significant in these strikes was the elimination of General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces since 2016. Bagheri functioned as Tehran’s chief military strategist, coordinating operations across the Iranian army, IRGC, and air defenses. A veteran of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, Bagheri was deeply entrenched in the regime’s inner workings, particularly in intelligence and strategic military planning. As Iran’s primary military liaison with Russia and Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, Bagheri orchestrated joint operations throughout the Syrian civil war. His fingerprints were all over Iran’s efforts to modernize its missile and air defense systems, dramatically increasing the regional threat level. Israel had long identified Bagheri as a critical threat, and his removal significantly disrupts Iran’s military cohesion and strategic coordination.

These targeted strikes, which also eliminated Ali Hajizadeh, head of the IRGC Aerospace Force, and at least 20 senior Iranian commanders, represent more than a tactical victory. They mark a strategic turning point in the ongoing struggle against Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional aggression. After months of fruitless negotiations, the Trump administration’s policy of strength and deterrence has proven superior to endless diplomacy that only emboldened Iran’s belligerence.

President Trump’s steadfast commitment to Israel and his firm stance against Iranian aggression contrasts sharply with the weakness and appeasement that characterized Biden-era diplomacy. For too long, Iran was allowed to advance its nuclear ambitions and spread violence unchecked.
