Terry Moran didn’t waste time after getting dropped by ABC News—he’s now on Substack. After his social media meltdown about Stephen Miller, Moran resurfaced as a “storyteller” and “seeker.” Because when legacy media won’t let you rant uninterrupted, there’s always Substack and a fresh cup of self-importance.
Here’s the headline that greeted me this morning: “Fired ABC News reporter Terry Moran finds new job — a day after boot from company over Stephen Miller tirade.” I thought, “Wow, that was fast. What is it? MSNBC? The Atlantic? A think tank?”
Nope. He started a Substack. Bold. Revolutionary.
The Hill reminds us of why Terry Moran is no longer employed at ABC:
Moran was suspended by the network last weekend for a post on X in which he referred to Miller as a “world-class hater” and said “you can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate.”
Trump also got criticism from Moran in the post, with Moran also referring to him as “a world-class hater,” saying that “his hatred only a means to an end, and that end [is] his own glorification. That’s his spiritual nourishment.” – The Hill
Maybe he’ll go with He Eats Is Hate as a title and can be Substack’s first food blog fueled entirely by moral superiority. But knowing Terry, he’ll probably stick with something humble like Terry Moran: Journalism’s Spiritual Compass.
I was a reporter and anchor for ABC News. And as you may have heard … I’m not there anymore.
Now I’m on Substack, that amazing space, and I can’t wait to get into the important work that we all have to do. pic.twitter.com/4grrPmODtF

Before Terry Moran took his talents to Substack to “seek truth” or whatever, he had one last chance to make journalism magic: a one-on-one sit-down with Donald Trump. You could practically see Moran trying to channel his inner Edward R. Murrow; leaning in, locking eyes, hoping to rattle the most unflappable president in history. Trump didn’t blink. Instead, he delivered a scorcher
Trump’s last words to Terry Moran:
“We had a president that was grossly incompetent. You knew it. I knew it. Everybody knew it. But you guys didn’t write it because you’re fake news … And by the way, ABC is one of the worst. I have to be honest with you.” pic.twitter.com/I0EkwvXR6x

Starting a Substack isn’t a job. It’s what people do when nobody’s offering them one. If you have Wi-Fi and a bruised ego, congratulations—you too can be a media brand now.
The 65-year-old journalist resurfaced his Substack account and vowed he would get back to the “important work,” he said Wednesday, a day after he was booted from the Disney-owned network.
[…]
“For almost 28 years, I was a reporter and anchor for ABC News, as you may have heard, I am not there anymore. I’m here with you, on Substack,” Moran said in a video posted to the site.
“This amazing space and I can’t wait to get at it. Get into the important work that we all have to do in this time of such trouble for our country.”
Moran revealed he would be publishing his own reporting and interviews on his site.
He teased it would take some time to get the account up and running because “he had to get some stuff sorted out.” – New York Post
It’ll take him time? Probably. He’s got to figure out how to set it all up himself now—no more production team, no more assistants handling his so-called research, and definitely no one to fetch his dry cleaning. Welcome to the freelance life, Terry.
Terry Moran’s not the only legacy media type trying to stage a second act behind a paywall. Former Washington Post staffers have been peeling off left and right to start their own little “independent” empires. Jennifer Rubin ditched the Post to co-found The Contrarian, a self-important “pro-democracy” outfit with Norm Eisen.
If you’re dying to know how The Contrarian revolution is going, good news—they have a YouTube channel. Because nothing says cutting-edge journalism like weird boomer-angle webcam shots and dramatic readings from a dining room table flanked by crooked bookshelves and the ghost of newsroom relevance.
And then we have Taylor Lorenz launching User Mag on Substack, because apparently, TikTok drama needs its own newsletter now.
Even Ann Telnaes and Amanda Katz have joined the migration to Substack. It’s become the go-to move: lose your platform, reinvent yourself as a bold truth-teller, and hope nobody remembers your bylines. Terry’s just the latest to grab a keyboard and call it a comeback.
Hat tip to Breitbart News for firing up the Wayback Machine and reminding us that 14 years ago, we got a crystal-clear glimpse of Terry Moran, whom they’ve perfectly dubbed Future Obscure Podcaster, back when he was still cosplaying as an objective journalist. Moran had the privilege of interviewing Andrew Breitbart about the Tea Party. And of course, wouldn’t you know it, Moran shows his ass true colors.
If you missed our original breakdown of Moran’s ABC exit, catch up with Lisa’s post about the firing of Terry Moran.
This is the new media model: get fired, start a Substack, declare yourself a truth-teller. Terry Moran isn’t breaking the mold; he’s following the well-worn path of legacy journalists clinging to relevance one paid post at a time. Substack has become the retirement home for self-proclaimed seekers who were a little too smug for mainstream media and a little too self-righteous to fade quietly into the background. And if the first post is any clue, Moran’s “important work” will be less reporting, more sermonizing.
It’s not journalism—it’s brand rehab with a comment section.
