Two teenagers from California are facing shocking accusations after allegedly beating a 66-year-old man to death outside a church—returning multiple times to continue the brutal assault before fleeing with the victim’s clothing, according to prosecutors.
The victim, identified as Davy Glen Pichel of Oxnard, was discovered on the morning of June 5 outside St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. He was found with severe head and facial injuries and partially unclothed, authorities said. A church volunteer stumbled upon his body near a side entrance next to a wheelchair.
According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, the two teens, ages 14 and 15, ambushed Pichel while he was asleep near the church building. Disturbing surveillance footage allegedly shows the boys approaching him as he sat by the church’s side door, then launching a violent attack that included punching and stomping.
Prosecutors say the teens left the scene after the initial beating but returned more than once, taking turns continuing the assault. “On their third return, the suspects delivered a final round of violence before stripping the victim of his clothing and fleeing,” the DA’s office said in a statement.
Authorities have not revealed a motive, but emphasized the cruelty and repetition of the attack. The footage reportedly shows no provocation from the victim.
The teens are currently being held at a local juvenile detention facility. Their court arraignment, initially scheduled for this week, has been postponed until June 24. For now, the case is proceeding in juvenile court.
The community of Oxnard has been left stunned by the gruesome killing outside a place of worship. The investigation is ongoing, and the district attorney’s office has not ruled out the possibility of transferring the case to adult court, depending on further review.
This isn’t the only recent case involving teen violence. In a similar incident earlier this year, two girls were charged after allegedly killing a man “for fun.”
