Every year, the White House throws a massive event and invites every sitting senator to the party, regardless of party affiliation.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has been very vocal about not supporting President Donald Trump’s big, beautiful bill, and the commander in chief has lobbed some bombs at him in the process.
Now, Paul is claiming that a Trump staffer “uninvited” him to the aforementioned picnic, a situation that Trump has since reportedly rectified.
Not invited
Paul was clearly upset over the level of pettiness he believed was on display here.
He stated, “I think I’m the first senator in the history of the United States to be uninvited to the White House picnic.”
The senator continued, “Every Democrat will be invited, every Republican will be invited, but I will be the only one disallowed to come on the grounds of the White House.”
Paul added, “I just find this incredibly petty. The level of immaturity is beyond words.”
When Paul went to claim his tickets, he stated that he had found out that he was no longer on the guest list, which infuriated him because he had planned to bring his young grandson to the event.
Paul continued to spit venom on Wednesday, stating, “They’re afraid of what I’m saying, so they think they’re going to punish me, I can’t go to the picnic, as if somehow that’s going to make me more conciliatory.”
The lawmaker added, “So it’s silly, in a way, but it’s also just really sad that this is what it’s come to. But petty vindictiveness like this, it makes you — it makes you wonder about the quality of people you’re dealing with.”
As the reports blew up all day on Wednesday, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to calm things down on Thursday morning, posting, “Of course Senator Rand Paul and his beautiful wife and family are invited to the BIG White House Party tonight.”
Paul has always been a fiscal hawk, and his concerns about this bill are very real, as I share many of the same reservations and have repeatedly stated that I would not support the bill as it is currently constituted for a variety of reasons.
Trump took to bullying people to get them to cave to support the bill, but he has been struggling to use that strategy in the Senate, as Republicans have been holding firm on the elements of the measure they do not support.
Rather than opening up a dialogue, Trump has been threatening to primary people, and now this stunt. I don’t believe for a second that this was not intentional, and I stand with Paul on this one and believe he has every right to be livid about this little stunt, be it from Trump or someone like Stephen Cheung, who apparently thinks he is the smartest person in the room.
