CIA Analyst Betrays America’s Trust
The Department of Justice has given a 37-month prison sentence to former CIA analyst Asif William Rahman after he admitted to leaking classified documents detailing Israel’s planned military strike against Iran. Rahman, 34, held a top-secret security clearance and had been employed by the CIA since 2016 until his arrest in November 2024.

The leaked intelligence revealed critical details about Israeli aviation exercises and military movements in preparation for a retaliatory strike against Iran. The unauthorized disclosure forced Israeli officials to delay their planned attack after the sensitive information became public, potentially compromising operational security.
National Security Compromised
Rahman accessed and printed two top-secret documents from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency on October 17, 2024, while working at the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia. The classified materials, which included satellite images of an Israeli base, appeared on social media platforms including Telegram by October 18, jeopardizing allied operations and U.S. intelligence integrity.
“For months, this defendant betrayed the American people and the oaths he took upon entering his office by leaking some of our Nation’s most closely held secrets,” said John Eisenberg, Assistant Attorney General for National Security.
The leak occurred during a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East, after Iran had launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1 in retaliation for the killings of senior figures in Hamas and Hezbollah.

Court documents described the leaked information as “regarding a United States foreign ally and its planned kinetic actions against a foreign adversary.” Rahman’s actions directly interfered with Israel’s ability to respond to Iranian aggression, forcing our ally to adjust their military timeline and potentially putting operations at risk.
Justice Served
After transmitting the classified information to unauthorized recipients, Rahman attempted to cover his tracks by deleting work products, destroying electronic devices, and shredding original documents. FBI agents arrested Rahman in Cambodia on November 12, 2024, where he had been working at the U.S. Embassy at the time of his betrayal.
“By stealing and divulging classified information and then attempting to conceal his crimes, Asif Rahman not only violated the law; he also betrayed his oath as a government employee and his responsibility to the American people,” said Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division. Rahman pleaded guilty to two counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information, charges that carried a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Despite being a Yale University graduate and former high school valedictorian, Rahman chose to betray his country’s trust. During sentencing, he accepted responsibility for his actions, citing “family-related grief” and trauma from his assignment in Iraq as factors in his decision-making, though these excuses do little to mitigate the damage done to national security and relations with our strongest Middle East ally.
