Newsom Gives Address Amid Protests

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday issued a forceful statement denouncing violent anti-ICE protesters while sharply criticizing President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy military forces to Los Angeles. The governor made clear that criminal activity will not be tolerated—but warned that the president’s actions represent a dangerous federal overreach threatening both state sovereignty and democratic norms.

Speaking from Sacramento, Newsom announced that 220 arrests had already been made in connection with the ongoing unrest in Los Angeles. Authorities, he added, are actively reviewing surveillance footage to pursue further prosecutions. “Those who engage in violence will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.

However, Newsom drew a distinction between criminal behavior and lawful protest. He extended gratitude to individuals who demonstrated peacefully against deportations and immigration raids targeting migrant laborers across Southern California. “Peaceful assembly is not what Trump wanted,” Newsom asserted, framing the president’s response as one favoring “escalation,” “theatrics,” and “more force.”

At the center of Newsom’s criticism is the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and active-duty Marines to suppress what the White House has labeled domestic disorder. Newsom characterized the move as unconstitutional and heavy-handed. “We honor their service. But we do not want our streets militarized by our own armed forces,” he said. “Not in LA, not in California, not anywhere.”

Newsom revealed that his administration has taken formal legal action to counter the deployment. “Just yesterday, we filed a legal challenge to Donald Trump’s reckless deployment of American troops to a major American city,” he said. “Today, we sought an emergency court order to stop the use of the American military to engage in law enforcement activities across Los Angeles.”

He described a city transformed by the presence of federal troops in unmarked vehicles, detaining residents without warrants. “They’re arresting dishwashers, gardeners, day laborers and seamstresses. That’s just weakness masquerading as strength,” Newsom charged. “Trump’s government isn’t protecting our communities—they’re traumatizing our communities.”

Tensions between Newsom and federal officials intensified in recent days after Border Czar Tom Homan suggested arresting the California governor over immigration interference. Trump later endorsed the notion, saying Newsom’s “primary crime was running for governor because he’s done such a bad job.”

Newsom responded defiantly. “He’s calling for a sitting governor to be arrested for no other reason than, in his own words, for getting elected,” he said. Newsom reiterated his prior dare to Homan: “Come and get me, tough guy.” According to the governor, Homan has since walked back his threat.
