Barack and Michelle Obama celebrate daughter’s birthday

It seems like every time we turn around, someone is starting a new rumor about the Obamas splitting up.

This week, the former president and former first lady couldn’t catch a break after posting about their daughter’s birthday.

To that point, the Daily Mail framed a narrative around the notion that Barack and Michelle Obama were putting on a “brave face” amid divorce rumors.

Not getting divorced

First and foremost, let’s address the framing of the post in the Daily Mail.

I can say fairly confidently that the Obamas are nowhere near getting a divorce, as the narrative is virtually completely manufactured by the media.

Now, I am not saying that the couple did not go through a rough patch recently, as it seems like Michelle was clearly taking a break and getting some distance from Barack, but I think they are far too worried about their public image to get divorced, even if they are now miserable together.

I am sure everyone has noticed that Michelle has been doing her own thing with her podcast, on which she often talks about some of the challenges she and Barack have faced.

However, she has also stated, “If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it.”

I happen to believe that much of the drama the Obamas are seeing in the media is Michelle playing to the rumors in order to keep herself relevant.

To that point, this weekend, Michelle posted, “Happy birthday to my sweet girl, Sasha! Can’t believe how quickly time has flown. I’m so proud of the woman you’ve become. Love you always!”

That caption was under a photo that appeared to be the family on vacation.

During a recent podcast, Michelle actually seemed as though she was trying to quell the rumors, calling Barack “her person.”

She added, “The beauty of my husband and our partnership is that neither one of us was ever really, ever going to quit at it, because that’s not who we are. And I know that about him. He knows that about me.”

Most of the divorce rumors got started when Michelle started to open up about her marriage on her new podcast as well as other shows on which she has appeared, but to me, this was Michelle just telling stories.

For instance, in one episode, she stated, “At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know?”

She went on, “I’m 60 years old, I’ve finished a really hard thing in my life with my family intact, I’m an empty nester, my girls are in — you know, they’ve been launched.”

This is just like all the rumors about Michelle running for president that never came to fruition. I put that speculation down from the start because I knew there was no way Michelle was going to give up her posh lifestyle to move back into the White House, and it is much the same reason she will never divorce Barack.
