Longtime ABC News anchor Terry Moran is out after igniting a political firestorm with a late-night social media tirade aimed at President Trump and top adviser Stephen Miller.
The veteran journalist’s public meltdown, which violated the network’s policy on impartiality, ended his nearly 30-year career in broadcast journalism.
Moran’s unfiltered post on X, accusing Miller of feeding on hate and calling Trump a “world-class hater,” triggered immediate backlash, as Resist the Mainstream highlighted on Sunday.
Though he deleted the post shortly after publishing it, the damage had already been done.
Screenshots circulated rapidly, even landing on the official account of White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
On Tuesday, ABC News confirmed the firing, stating, “We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran and based on his recent post – which was a clear violation of ABC News policies – we have made the decision to not renew.”
The spokesperson emphasized the network’s supposed commitment to “objectivity, fairness and professionalism.”
In the since-deleted rant, Moran criticized both Miller and Trump.
“Miller is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred. He’s a world-class hater,” he wrote.
“You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate. Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred only a means to an end, and that end his own glorification.”
The network initially placed Moran on suspension “pending further evaluation,” attempting to contain the fallout.
However, with rising public scrutiny and Trump allies demanding accountability, ABC took a final step days later by declining to renew Moran’s contract.
Notably, this came just months after the network was forced to pay Trump a $15 million libel settlement over unrelated on-air defamation, the Daily Mail reports.
The former “Nightline” co-anchor had recently interviewed Trump in the Oval Office.
Trump, commenting on the interaction at the time, downplayed Moran’s significance, saying he chose the journalist because he had “never heard of him.”
The post that ended Moran’s career did not go unnoticed by the very people it attacked.
Miller responded directly, calling Moran’s outburst a revealing moment.
“The most important fact about Terry’s full public meltdown is what it shows about the corporate press in America,” Miller stated. “For decades, the privileged anchors and reporters narrating and gatekeeping our society have been radicals adopting a journalist’s pose. Terry pulled off his mask.”
Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, calling Moran’s statement “a vile smear” and demanding that ABC apologize to Miller.
Moran, 65, had built a career covering major political stories as ABC’s Chief White House Correspondent and later as Chief Foreign Correspondent.
His tenure with the network began in 1997, after stints at The New Republic and Court TV.
He also earned honors such as the White House Correspondents’ Merriman Smith Award and a Peabody Award, per the Daily Mail.
Despite that legacy, the incident highlights the shifting political environment in media, particularly in a second Trump administration where corporate newsrooms face added pressure to avoid bias.
Moran’s departure highlights the challenges faced by journalists navigating the balance between personal views and professional standards in mainstream media.
