Some renovation projects at the White House and on the grounds that were previously announced have gotten underway this week, according to reporters who witnessed the beginning of the work.
Ground was broken Monday on the paving of the Rose Garden lawn and the installation of two flagpoles, one on the north lawn and one on the south lawn.
Trump had previously said the Rose Garden grass would be removed and pavement installed because it is “always wet” and that women found it hard to walk on the grass in heels.
Other projects inside the building include gold touches being added and new artwork of Trump being installed.
“Paid for by Trump”
Reporters noticed that construction had begun Monday when they waited for Trump’s return on Marine Force One from a retreat at Camp David.
Employees of the National Park Service will work on the project, which estimates say will take two months.
Trump bragged after getting off the helicopter about installing the flagpoles, which he said were “paid for by Trump.”
“They’ve needed flagpoles for 200 years,” he said, even though there is a central flagpole on the peak of the building that flies the American and POW/MIA flags.
Also, a ballroom
A ballroom is also planned for installation in the White House, “compliments of a man known as Donald J. Trump,” Trump said on social media.
It wasn’t clear if he meant that he ordered the work to be done at taxpayer’s expense, or that he was actually paying for the work to be done.
After inspecting the site for the ballroom, Trump wrote on Friday that it would be a “wonderful addition” and is an example of the “‘fun’ projects I do while thinking about the World Economy, the United States, China, Russia, and lots of other Countries, places, and events.”
It is common for presidents to make small changes to the official presidential residence, which also has public availability for tours, houses meetings, and gives the press access to the president when he is there.
The Rose Garden renovations have removed a limestone border that First Lady Melania Trump had put in during her husband’s first term in office.
“The People’s House” will be looking very Trumpish, at least until the next president is elected.
