Southern Baptists on Tuesday passed a resolution that calls upon the Supreme Court to overturn its ruling that legalized gay marriage, noting the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion.
The conservative denomination has long opposed gay marriage, but the resolution marks the first time it has chosen to fight to overturn the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges. The resolution was passed during the first day of the Protestant denomination’s annual meeting in Dallas, according to the New York Times.
The resolution was part of a broader measure that also called to defund Planned Parenthood and to keep transgender athletes out of female sports.
“What we’re trying to do is keep the conversation [on gay marriage] alive,” the resolution’s author Andrew Walker told the outlet.
Walker said he was inspired by the successful push to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022.
