The GOP just had a shockwave work its way through the House with an unexpected retirement.
Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) has announced that he will be stepping down very soon.
Green will wait until the Trump-backed spending bill is passed, but then he will leave office.
Time to go
Green has only been serving in Congress since 2019, but he is the highest-ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee.
The congressman stated that a rather promising opportunity has surfaced in the private sector, so he is about to abandon the people who trusted him to serve out his full term.
If I sound a bit upset, I am, as I do not like people who use Congress as a steppingstone before their commitment to voters has been fulfilled.
Green explained, “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from Congress.”
He went on, “Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up.”
The lawmaker added, “As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package.”
Green continued, “Though I planned to retire at the end of the previous Congress, I stayed to ensure that President Trump’s border security measures and priorities make it through Congress.”
He concluded, “By overseeing the border security portion of the reconciliation package, I have done that. After that, I will retire, and there will be a special election to replace me.”
The hubris of these people never ceases to amaze me.
He could have left office and backed someone else to run for his seat, and the legislation still would have passed, but he chose to stay on and is now leaving an empty seat that will have to be filled in the middle of the term.
Once Green leaves office, the governor will have 10 days to set a date for the special election, which must be between 55 and 60 days from the date of the writ.
This should be an easy win for Republicans, as Green won his 2024 election by more than 21%, but I just hate taking chances, and I don’t like to see the party waste money in an election in which it should never have been forced to participate.
Keep in mind, due to the timing of this, it will lead right into the 2026 election cycle, so whoever wins this race will immediately have to get to work to defend the seat in the mid-term election cycle. Had Green stepped down after his last term, we would have an incumbent with a strong record of having helped pass key parts of Trump’s agenda.
