Tesla CEO Elon Musk executed a dramatic reversal in his relationship with President Donald Trump, shifting from harsh criticism to vocal support within days as Los Angeles descended into chaos over immigration enforcement operations.
The billionaire’s public about-face occurred against the backdrop of violent protests that erupted following federal immigration raids across Los Angeles on June 6, 2025, which resulted in the arrest of dozens of individuals.
The timing of Musk’s pivot raised questions about his motivations and the influence of potential business considerations on his public statements.
Musk had launched a sustained attack on Trump’s legislative agenda just one week prior, specifically targeting the president’s $1.6 trillion tax and spending package known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
Musk called the legislation a “disgusting abomination” that will increase the federal deficit, urging lawmakers to reject the comprehensive spending measure.
The Tesla executive escalated his criticism by posting a 2013 Trump tweet that criticized debt ceiling extensions, adding his own commentary of “Wise words” to underscore his disagreement with the current administration’s fiscal approach.
President Trump responded forcefully to Musk’s many attacks, expressing disappointment and threatening to terminate government contracts with the billionaire’s companies.
Violent confrontations, however, erupted between helmeted police in riot gear and protesters in downtown Los Angeles on June 6.
The unrest prompted the deployment of National Guard troops to restore order, with authorities using flash bangs, pepper spray and tear gas to disperse crowds as demonstrators attempted to interfere with federal operations.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass found themselves in direct conflict with federal authorities.
By June 8, Musk’s tone underwent a complete transformation as he began reposting Trump’s Truth Social messages with American flag emojis, signaling his alignment with the administration’s law enforcement response.
Musk shared Trump’s statement criticizing Newsom and Bass: “Governor Gavin Newscum and ‘Mayor’ Bass should apologize to the people of Los Angeles for the absolutely horrible job that they’ve done, and this now includes the ongoing L.A. riots.”
The billionaire also amplified Vice President JD Vance’s post containing Trump’s declaration: “A once great American city, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals. Now violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents to try and stop our deportation operations—But these lawless riots only strengthen our resolve.”
Responding to images of the civil unrest, Musk posted “This is not O.K.”
The rapid shift contrasted sharply with his previous week’s sustained criticism, during which he had characterized the spending bill as a “deficit-fueling behemoth” and suggested Trump’s tariff policies would trigger a recession.
Political observers noted that Musk’s companies, particularly SpaceX, maintain significant federal contracts worth billions of dollars, making the billionaire vulnerable to Trump’s threatened retaliation over government business relationships.
Rift News reported that SpaceX alone holds contracts worth approximately $4 billion with NASA and the Department of Defense, representing a substantial portion of the company’s revenue stream.
Tesla also benefits from federal tax credits and regulatory policies that support electric vehicle adoption, creating additional leverage points for the Trump administration.
