A 47-year-old man in Minnesota is accused of killing his father, allegedly stabbing the older man to death in his home earlier this week, then drunkenly driving off the road and attempting to hitch a ride away from the scene before turning himself in. Troy Blaine Almhjeld was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with one count of second-degree murder in the bizarre slaying of 71-year-old Blaine Lars Almhjeld, authorities announced.
According to a news release from the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and state troopers at about 2:11 a.m. on June, 3, 2025, responded to a 911 call about an abandoned vehicle just off the roadway on Highway 22 South near the Terrace View Gold Course, which is about 80 miles southwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The 911 caller told the emergency dispatcher that the driver of the abandoned vehicle — later identified as Troy Almhjeld — drove off the road and asked for a ride before walking north on Highway 22. The witness told police that Troy Almhjeld appeared to be intoxicated, the Minnesota Star Tribune reported.
First responders searched the area but were unable to locate him.
Investigators ran a check on the vehicle and learned that it was registered to Blaine Almhjeld. Authorities responded to the 71-year-old man’s residence in the 200 block of Silver Street West in Mapleton, Minnesota.
At the home, they found Blaine Almhjeld inside suffering from “obvious signs of trauma” and what appeared to be multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police soon learned that the victim lived with his son, leading police to launch a search for Troy Almhjeld.
As authorities continued searching for Troy Almhjeld along Highway 22, he allegedly emerged from the woods around the golf course and “approached deputies” conducting the search. He was immediately taken into custody and, after it was verified that he lived with his father, charged in connection with the older man’s murder.
Court documents obtained by St. Paul ABC affiliate KSTP provided additional details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged patricide.
According to the report, when deputies first arrived at the victim’s home, the door was ajar and they could see a body inside. Blaine Almhjeld was reportedly covered in blood and had suffered a series of puncture wounds, a large laceration going across his chest, and visible head trauma, among other injuries.
Authorities recovered a kitchen knife from inside the home that had blood on it and appeared to match the puncture wounds on Blaine Almhjeld.
When Troy Almhjeld emerged from the woods, he claimed that he had just been run off the road and into the river by another driver, saying he had been in the water until recently, per the Tribune.
He then began asking how his father was doing, saying the two had been arguing earlier that evening.
“All kind of weird s— was going on,” he allegedly said, according to KSTP. “Bad s—. And he won’t tell me what’s going on.”
Almhjeld is currently in custody and scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
