California Gov. Gavin Newsom escalated tensions over federal immigration enforcement this weekend by openly challenging President Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, to arrest him.
The provocative remarks come as violent anti-ICE protests have rocked Los Angeles for several days, prompting the Trump administration to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to restore order.
Newsom’s defiant stance was expressed in a Sunday interview with NBC News, where he dismissed warnings from Homan that local leaders who obstruct immigration enforcement could face criminal charges.
“Come after me. Arrest me. Let’s just get it over with, tough guy,” Newsom said, rejecting responsibility for the escalating unrest in his state.
The Trump administration has taken a hard line in response to the chaos.
Over the weekend, widespread protests in Los Angeles turned confrontational as demonstrators clashed with ICE agents and law enforcement officials.
Video footage captured scenes of violence, vandalism and attempts to block deportation operations.
In reaction, Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 California National Guard troops to help quell the disturbances and support federal immigration officers.
A senior administration official emphasized that the federal government was stepping in to restore law and order amid what they described as a breakdown in local leadership.
Homan, the former acting ICE director, had warned that interference with immigration enforcement is a federal felony.
“It’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien,” Homan said in a weekend interview, per the New York Post. “It’s a felony to impede law enforcement doing their job.”
Despite these warnings, Newsom used his NBC interview to portray ICE agents as aggressors, urging authorities to “let your hands off 4-year-old girls that are trying to get educated” and defend illegal immigrants he described as hardworking taxpayers living in fear.
He framed the situation as a human rights issue rather than a matter of law enforcement.
Newsom also accused the Trump administration of weaponizing federal power for political purposes, labeling the deployment of troops as an “authoritarian” move driven by “command and control” and personal ego.
He vowed to file a lawsuit on Monday to block the federal troop deployment, claiming the administration failed to properly coordinate with the state.
“This is about power,” Newsom said. “They never coordinated with the governor of the state.”
Critics, particularly on the conservative side, see Newsom’s rhetoric as reckless, accusing him of prioritizing political theater over public safety and legal responsibilities.
Many are calling for accountability for state and local officials who impede federal immigration enforcement efforts.
Homan, meanwhile, maintained a firm stance against political interference.
Responding to Newsom’s defiance, he said, “I’ll say it about anybody. No one is above the law.”
The situation in Los Angeles reflects broader conflicts between the Trump administration’s enforcement priorities and California’s sanctuary state policies.
As protests continue to disrupt the city, the showdown between Newsom and federal authorities is set to intensify.
With public safety hanging in the balance and legal battles looming, the escalating dispute over immigration enforcement is becoming a defining political and cultural flashpoint in California and beyond.
