It’s past time to arrest California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, who have violated federal law and now are facilitating violent riots against ICE that also break the law.
It is a sad reflection that in America, which is supposed to be a democratic republic, criminals just seem to need to get a hold of an elected or bureaucratic office to avoid ever being arrested or charged with crimes. We have a titled political aristocracy for whom there is a whole different standard of accountability under the law— or rather, no accountability at all.
Trump and his border czar Tom Homan both directly or tacitly acknowledged that what Newsom has done is a violation of the law, and Newsom then arrogantly challenged Homan to arrest him. If the Trump administration doesn’t take up that challenge, not only will the law be henceforth meaningless (because it won’t be applied to elected officials), but Newsom will win this crucial political battle and we can expect a repeat of 2020’s nightmarish nationwide violence.
Don’t arrest the mob lackeys and shy away from arresting the mob bosses. That’s unjust and un-American.
The Republicans in power now, including Trump, are apparently never going to arrest accused felons/criminals Joe Biden, Anthony Fauci, Mark Milley, Hillary Clinton, Ilhan Omar, and the numerous other Democrat (and sometimes Republican) politicians and officials who would be in prison by now if they had committed their crimes without holding the offices they did. Add Newsom and Bass to the lineup. Despite the fact that Democrats are happy to arrest and lock up their political opponents who didn’t violate the law, Republicans are terrified of arresting their political opponents who did violate the law. That’s how you know all of the jargon about law and order and enforcing the law equally from the Republican side is just so much empty blowharding.
The above-named individuals and many others will get off with little more than a slap on the wrist, and perhaps an election or job loss. If you or I committed the same crimes, we would be facing a whole different standard of accountability. That’s because we don’t have titles to protect us from the consequences of our actions.
Yes, Newsom and Bass broke the law. According to 18 U.S. Code § 111, anyone who “forcibly assaults, resists, opposes, impedes, intimidates, or interferes with” designated federal officers carrying out their duties has committed a criminal offense. If you assault the officer with a deadly weapon, you could face up to 20 years in prison. All of that describes the LA rioters. It also describes the conduct of Newsom and Bass, because they have actively interfered with federal actions to enforce immigration law and end the riots, and because they have long enforced sanctuary policies. Indeed, Newsom and Bass’s sanctuary policies also violate 8 U.S.C. § 1324, which makes a person who “conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such [an illegal] alien in any place” in violation of the law.
Do we live in an oligarchy where individuals with political titles can break the law without any fear of consequences? That’s what the Trump administration has to decide.
