Tensions between President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk reached a boiling point this weekend after Trump publicly warned of “very serious consequences” if Musk were to financially support Democratic candidates.
The warning came during a sit-down interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, where Trump was asked how he would respond if Musk, once a key supporter, crossed party lines.
“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump said. “He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that.”
The relationship between the two once-powerful allies has rapidly deteriorated in recent days.
The fallout began after Musk publicly criticized Trump’s signature “Big Beautiful Bill,” which includes significant spending cuts to green energy subsidies—something that directly impacts Musk’s electric vehicle empire.
On Friday, Trump confirmed that the two are no longer on speaking terms.
“I would assume so, yeah,” he said when asked if the relationship was over. “I’m too busy doing other things. I won an election in a landslide. I gave him a lot of breaks, long before this happened.”
The former allies’ rift has triggered a firestorm online and within political circles.
Trump allies have accused Musk of turning against the administration in retaliation for policy moves affecting Tesla and SpaceX, including a rollback of electric vehicle mandates and the removal of a Musk-aligned nominee to lead NASA.
That nominee, Jared Isaacman, had previously worked with Musk through SpaceX.
Trump’s decision to rescind the nomination followed reports of tension between Musk and Sergio Gor, the head of the Presidential Personnel Office.
Gor allegedly vowed to block Musk’s influence after clashing with him over appointments, as Resist the Mainstream previously reported.
Though Musk initially denied political motivations, his recent activity tells a different story.
In a series of posts on X, Musk voiced concerns over the spending in Trump’s bill, arguing it would balloon the national debt, which now exceeds $36 trillion.
“It’ll wipe out everything our DOGE team built,” Musk claimed in one post, referring to his internal economic team.
The escalating spat took a personal turn when Musk posted a now-deleted message implying Trump’s name had surfaced in documents tied to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump quickly brushed off the implication, calling it “old news” and noting that even Epstein’s lawyer confirmed he had “nothing to do with it.”
“I gave him breaks in my first administration and saved his life in my first administration,” Trump added during the NBC interview. “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
Musk has stated he will scale back political donations ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump, however, remains skeptical, warning that any financial support for Democratic campaigns will be seen as a betrayal.
Vice President JD Vance also weighed in on the fallout, calling the incident a “classic example of Big Tech overreach meeting political accountability.”
Vance criticized Musk’s “disrespectful tone” and defended Trump’s handling of tech industry regulation, according to the Daily Mail.
Adding to the tension, the Washington Post reported that the Isaacman nomination was pulled not just because of Musk’s policy stance but due to Gor’s ongoing vendetta.
Musk, the report notes, had tried to exert influence over federal appointments—a move that ruffled feathers in the West Wing.
Trump, meanwhile, emphasized that his administration remains focused on results.
“We’re not here to please billionaires who turn on us,” he said. “We’re here to fight for working Americans.”
