Los Angeles descended into chaos this weekend as violent protests erupted following a series of federal immigration raids.
The unrest escalated to the point where authorities called in the California National Guard, deploying thousands of troops to quell the disorder and protect federal officers conducting enforcement operations.
With tensions mounting, officials also warned that active-duty Marines remain on high alert should the violence continue to spiral, the New York Post reports.
The turmoil unfolded near a Home Depot in Paramount, California, where federal agents in riot gear clashed with demonstrators attempting to block immigration arrests.
Video footage circulating online showed protesters throwing rocks at Border Patrol vehicles, breaking windshields and injuring at least one federal officer.
Tear gas and flash-bang grenades were deployed as agents tried to disperse the crowds. In one particularly striking scene, a burning American flag was set aflame amid the chaos.
Federal prosecutors announced multiple arrests for obstructing law enforcement, with U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli reporting over a dozen individuals detained on Saturday alone.
Border Patrol Chief Michael W. Banks confirmed arrests for assaulting agents during the confrontations.
Despite these actions, rioters continued to impede federal operations, even standing in front of buses used to transport detained illegal immigrants.
President Donald Trump sharply criticized local leadership, blaming Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for the unrest.
On social media, Trump warned that if state and city officials fail to control the situation, the federal government will intervene directly to restore order.
“If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can’t do their jobs, which everyone knows they can’t, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!” he wrote on Truth Social.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) echoed the president’s frustration, highlighting a dramatic 413 percent increase in assaults on ICE agents since January.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin condemned local officials for “villainizing and demonizing ICE law enforcement,” which she said contributed to the dangerous climate.
McLaughlin called on California leaders to demand an immediate end to the violence, praising the courage of ICE officers protecting American communities.
However, Newsom pushed back, accusing the federal government of deliberately escalating tensions to justify a stronger law enforcement response.
Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance condemned the protests as insurrectionist acts, accusing political leaders of undermining border enforcement and enabling attacks on federal agents.
The unrest began Friday after federal immigration agents conducted multiple raids across Los Angeles, including the city’s fashion district, according to The Post.
According to DHS reports, the Los Angeles Police Department delayed responding to initial protests by nearly two hours, a move that some officials say allowed rioters to gain momentum.
Downtown Los Angeles bore the marks of the unrest with vulgar graffiti targeting ICE agents and slogans calling for the removal of the Trump administration.
Radical left-wing groups reportedly distributed flyers urging the public to overthrow the “Trump Fascist Regime,” illustrating the politically charged environment behind the violence.
By Saturday night, protests continued unabated despite a heavy presence of National Guard troops and local law enforcement.
At least 44 arrests were made Friday evening, but the Los Angeles Police Department declined to comment on their handling of the situation.
