SACRAMENTO, CA – A high-speed police chase culminated in a tragic seven-car pileup in Sacramento’s Pocket neighborhood on Saturday morning, resulting in the death of an innocent driver. The chaotic scene unfolded at the intersection of Florin Road and Greenhaven Drive, where debris and damaged vehicles littered the area as a tow truck worked to clear the wreckage.
The incident began when Sacramento police responded to a call from a domestic violence victim requesting an escort to retrieve her belongings, fearing the suspect might be present. The suspect, 33-year-old Daniel Cunningham, was already on the police radar as a parolee at large, having evaded capture the previous weekend.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers spotted Cunningham in a vehicle near the residence. Attempts to stop him were unsuccessful, as Cunningham sped away, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit through the city.
The chase ended disastrously when Cunningham’s vehicle collided with multiple cars at a busy intersection. The violent crash claimed the life of an uninvolved driver, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Witnesses expressed outrage at the reckless actions of Cunningham, who made the choice to flee at high speeds, endangering the lives of countless others. “He put himself and everybody else in danger,” one witness remarked, reflecting the general sentiment of anger and frustration.
After the crash, Cunningham attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by the police. He now faces a series of charges, including parole violation, domestic violence, and several felonies related to the deadly crash.
Councilmember Rick Jennings expressed his condolences to the victims and emphasized the need for policy changes to prevent similar incidents in the future. “Our job as policymakers is to make it a safer environment for all,” Jennings said, highlighting the importance of reviewing and potentially revising existing policies.
