The credibility of legacy media took another major hit this week after ABC News suspended senior correspondent Terry Moran over a venomous online tirade directed at President Donald Trump and one of his closest advisers.
The post, which quickly drew fierce condemnation from the White House, accused both Trump and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller of being “world-class” haters. It has since been deleted.
The White House didn’t waste anytime hitting back. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt denounced the comments as “unacceptable and unhinged,” accusing the corporate media of harboring deep political bias.
“This is unacceptable and unhinged rhetoric coming from someone who works at a major television network,” Leavitt said Sunday during an appearance on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
“We have reached out to ABC. They have said they will be taking action, so we will see what they do.”
ABC confirmed later that day that Moran had been suspended.
In a statement to Fox News, a spokesperson for the network said, “ABC News stands for objectivity and impartiality in its news coverage and does not condone subjective personal attacks on others. The post does not reflect the views of ABC News and violated our standards.”
Moran’s deleted post unleashed a wave of criticism.
“Miller is a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred. He’s a world-class hater,” Moran wrote. “You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment. He eats his hate.”
He went on to describe Trump in similar terms.
“Trump is a world-class hater. But his hatred only [sic] a means to an end, and that end his [sic] own glorification.”
Miller, known for his hardline positions on immigration and national security, responded with sharp words of his own.
“The most important fact about Terry’s full public meltdown is what it shows about the corporate press in America,” Miller said in a statement.
“For decades, the privileged anchors and reporters narrating and gatekeeping our society have been radicals adopting a journalist’s pose. Terry pulled off his mask.”
Vice President JD Vance also joined the chorus of criticism.
“Dripping with hatred,” Vance said of Moran’s comments, warning Americans to remember the incident every time they watch ABC’s political coverage.
“Remember that every time you watch ABC’s coverage of the Trump administration,” he added.
The incident has resurfaced old tensions between Trump and Moran.
The ABC reporter previously interviewed Trump after his first 100 days in office, and the exchange quickly grew tense, as Resist the Mainstream previously highlighted.
Moran pressed the president on immigration and relations with Russia, prompting Trump to fire back.
“I don’t trust you. I don’t trust a lot of people,” Trump said. “Look at you. You’re so happy to do the interview, and then you start hitting me with these fake questions.”
During that same interview, Trump criticized the media’s refusal to call out the failures of the Biden administration.
“We had a president that was grossly incompetent,” he said. “You knew it. I knew it. Everybody knew it. You guys didn’t want to write about it because you’re fake news. By the way, ABC is one of the worst, I have to be honest with you.”
Conservatives are now pointing to Moran’s meltdown as yet another example of entrenched bias in corporate media.
While ABC moves to address the scandal, critics say the damage to public trust has already been done.
