Elon Musk has expanded his public feud with President Donald Trump by targeting one of Trump’s most prominent allies, Steve Bannon.
The billionaire Tesla and SpaceX CEO lashed out at Bannon on X, using slurs in response to recent comments from the former White House chief strategist.
“Bannon is peak retard,” Musk wrote in reply to a post highlighting remarks Bannon made about him. In another comment, Musk called Bannon a “communist r—-d,” repeating the insult with added political framing.
Bannon, a longtime critic of Musk, has been increasingly vocal in calling for the president to take action against the billionaire. He urged Trump to invoke the Defense Production Act to seize Musk’s companies and suggested Musk be deported, as Resist the Mainstream previously reported.
The podcaster and strategist questioned Musk’s motives, arguing the tech mogul was aligning with Trump not out of shared principles, but for self-serving reasons.
The growing hostility between Musk and Trump boiled over Thursday, with online insults and threats exchanged in real time across social media platforms.
Rather than cooling, the conflict has intensified, with Musk now setting his sights on Trump’s loyal inner circle. The slur Musk used mirrored language Trump himself has used in the past, including referring to then-Vice President Kamala Harris with the same term during his 2024 campaign.
Bannon, in turn, accused Musk—who was born in South Africa and later became a U.S. citizen—of immigration fraud. “They should initiate a formal investigation of his immigration status,” Bannon told The New York Times, alleging Musk may be “an illegal alien” who “should be deported.”
On his podcast, Bannon also demanded federal action. “President Trump, tonight, should sign an executive order calling up the Defense Production Act, and seize SpaceX tonight, before midnight,” he declared.
Bannon’s comments came in the wake of Trump’s own escalation against Musk.
The president had threatened to revoke federal contracts held by Musk’s companies. Musk responded by announcing that SpaceX would begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately, per the Daily Mail.
The International Space Station currently relies on commercial spacecraft like those from SpaceX, making the move significant if carried out.
However, it remains uncertain whether Trump can legally seize Musk’s businesses. The Defense Production Act, enacted during World War II, gives presidents authority over private industry during emergencies but has limits. President Joe Biden used it during the COVID-19 pandemic to boost vaccine production.
Musk’s companies hold approximately $3 billion in government contracts. The ongoing feud appears to be impacting market confidence. Tesla shares dropped 14% on Thursday, amounting to a loss of around $152.4 billion in market value.
The conflict further escalated when Musk endorsed a post calling for Trump’s impeachment and his replacement with Vice President JD Vance. Bannon reacted furiously to that endorsement.
Speaking to Politico’s Playbook, Bannon said Trump had treated Musk “almost like a son,” inviting him to Christmas dinner, offering him informal access, and including his family in events.
Bannon expressed outrage that Musk would support impeachment, saying, “F*ck you, dude. We’re going to go to f***ing war, and I’m going to rip your f***ing face off.”
