On Friday afternoon, the news broke that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the margarita date of Senator Chris Van Hollen, was being sent to the United States.
BUT, this wasn’t a “return,” as most of the media outlets tried to spin about their favorite beleagured “Maryland man.” This was an extradition. Kilmar Abrego Garcia was sent back to the United States, specifically to Tennessee, to face federal charges after being indicted by a grand jury back in May for human trafficking. President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, expert X troll, got in one final dig.
As I said in the Oval Office:
1. I would never smuggle a terrorist into the United States.
2. I would never release a gang member onto the streets of El Salvador. That said, we work with the Trump administration, and if they request the return of a gang member to face…

Van Hollen, Abrego Garcia’s personal senator, released a statement that managed to ignore all the pesky little details.
“For months, the Trump Administration flouted the Supreme Court and our Constitution,” Van Hollen said in a statement Friday. “Today, they appear to have finally relented to our demands for compliance with court orders and with the due process rights afforded to everyone in the United States. As I have repeatedly said, this is not about the man, it’s about his constitutional rights – and the rights of all. The Administration will now have to make its case in the court of law, as it should have all along.”
Um, yeah. About that. The case that was before Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland regarding Abrego Garcia’s status would now seem to be moot, and federal lawyers have filed paperwork to that effect, since he is now back in the country. Xinis may have been aware that the Department of Justice was pursuing federal charges, as the entire case had come to a halt back in April when a sealed motion was filed in the case. A grand jury indicted Abrego Garcia on May 21st, and now he is back to face the charges.
“Abrego Garcia has landed in the United States to face justice,” said Bondi. “A grand jury in the Middle District of Tennessee returned a sealed indictment charging him with alien smuggling and conspiracy.”
According to the indictment, Abrego Garcia played a “significant role” in a human smuggling ring operating for nearly a decade. Bondi described him as a full-time smuggler who made more than 100 trips, transporting women, children and MS-13 gang-affiliated persons throughout the U.S.
“He traded the innocence of minor children for profit,” Bondi said. Children were among those allegedly trafficked. The indictment, filed under seal last month, includes two felony counts.
The grand jury also heard allegations that Abrego Garcia trafficked firearms, narcotics and solicited explicit images of a minor. He is even accused by a co-conspirator of being involved in the murder of a rival gang member’s mother. He faces up to 10 years in prison for each person he is charged with trafficking.
While the indictment only has the two federal charges – conspiracy to commit human trafficking, and the actual transportation of illegal aliens – there were plenty of other unsavory details in the motion for pretrial detention that should be making Democrats run for the hills and far away from their previous championing of this guy. The indictment references that he was engaged in human trafficking from 2016 to 2025, that he is a member of MS-13, and he was accused of abusing the minor girls he trafficked, but that his other conspirators made him stop because it was “bad for business.” And we have also learned why he didn’t want to go back to El Salvador, and why he feared for his life there.

Yeah, that would do it.
The media, naturally, is going all in on the “Maryland man” bit.
NY Times: “Maryland man”
Fox: “Kilmar Abrego Garcia”
WaPo: “Maryland man”
Axios: “Maryland man”
USA Today: “Maryland father”
Only one of those stories is factual. The other four are pushing a narrative pic.twitter.com/hcSYXRFsFC

And even better, Representative Jamie Raskin, Democrat of Maryland, has no idea what anyone is talking about, the Democrats never championed this guy! To the videotape, Batman!
Jamie Raskin is now claiming that Democrats never defended Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

I know that Congressman Raskin would like to forget, but Democrats absolutely went to bat for Abrego Garcia. First it was Van Hollen, then it was a Congressional field trip of four House members, then it was yet another Maryland congressman… plus all the sympathetic media coverage of the “Maryland father” whose wife asked for two domestic violence protection orders against him, as they insisted that he couldn’t possibly be a gang member.
For his part, President Trump seems fine with having Abrego Garcia extradited back.
Trump appeared unbothered by Abrego Garcia’s return on Friday afternoon, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that the Department of Justice made the decision and that soon the world will see how “horrible” a person he is.
Trump expressed confidence in the DOJ and its case against Abrego Garcia.
“Maybe they just said, ‘Look, all of these people, these judges, they want to try and run the country.’ A local judge trying to run the country,” said Trump. “The man has a horrible past, and I could see a decision being made, bring him back, show everybody how horrible this guy is.”
The president said, “Frankly, we have to do something because the judges are trying to take the place of a president that won in a landslide. That’s not supposed to be the way it is. So, I can see bringing him back. I could see. He’s a bad guy.”
Now, the Democrats and the media have gotten what they wished for. Kilmar Abrego Garcia is back in the United States, but the monkey’s paw they used for that wish put him back behind bars yet again. I’m guessing that Senator Van Hollen won’t be going to Tennessee to insist on his release from federal custody. He’s already given his primary and general election challengers in 2028 plenty of ad material with his previous trip to El Salvador. The case in Maryland will likely be dismissed, his “return” has been “facilitated,” and now he faces up to ten years in prison for EACH person he transported via human trafficking – and the Tennessee traffic stop, according to the indictment, had nine other people crammed into his car. You do the math. Should Abrego Garcia be convicted, and get a sentence that is less than 90 years, then the courts need to toss the previous withholding of removal order that said he couldn’t be returned to El Salvador, or decide which country would take him after serving his sentence. Now that they got what they wanted in the most unsatisfying way possible, watch Democrats and the media quietly try to forget the name Kilmar Abrego Garcia, their erstwhile “Maryland man.”
