A horrifying animal cruelty case is unfolding in England, where a 25-year-old woman has been arrested after authorities discovered 37 dead dogs at a property believed to be operating as an animal shelter.
Essex Police confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, June 4, revealing that the woman, who is from London, is being investigated on suspicion of animal cruelty. The gruesome discovery was made during a joint visit by police, the RSPCA, and Basildon Council to a property in Crays Hill, near Basildon, last month.
Alongside the tragic find of 37 deceased dogs, authorities were able to rescue 21 live animals from the same location. Police said the investigation was sparked by a tip from a concerned member of the public.
“Further investigations are ongoing at the address,” Essex Police shared in a statement. They added that the woman has since been released on conditional bail while the probe continues.
The situation took another disturbing turn when additional animal remains were found after parts of the building were dismantled. Police say they’re working closely with the landowner to determine if these discoveries are connected to the case.
Inspector Steve Parry of the Basildon Neighborhood Policing Team urged the public to remain patient as the investigation unfolds. “We understand the concerns of the local community,” he said. “We would ask people not to speculate and allow us to carry out our complex and thorough investigations.”
This case has already led to the arrests of two other individuals, including 25-year-old Ovaeed Rahman. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, violating the Animal Welfare Act, and three counts of fraud by false representation tied to the ownership of dogs.
Rahman appeared in court on May 15 and is currently being held in custody until his next hearing at Basildon Crown Court on June 9.
Authorities say they’ve received a flood of public tips through a dedicated reporting portal and are reviewing every submission as the investigation widens. The RSPCA has not yet commented publicly on the case.
