An Oklahoma woman is behind bars after allegedly admitting she fired the shot that killed her neighbor — all while claiming she didn’t mean to hit anyone.
Elisha Kirby, 30, was arrested by Oklahoma City Police following the death of 45-year-old Billy Sorrels, who was found shot dead on the front porch of his home on Friday night.
According to police, Sorrels’ body was discovered after officers responded to a call about a possible shooting. Initially, investigators believed it may have been a suicide, especially after finding a rifle inside the home. Sorrels had reportedly been in a bedroom playing video games with a 12-year-old before the shooting occurred.
But that theory shifted after officers discovered a bullet hole in the wall — coming from the outside.
The investigation soon led to Kirby, Sorrels’ next-door neighbor. According to local CBS affiliate KDTV, she told police that she had fired her weapon during an argument with another woman — and admitted to having “anger issues.”
Court documents allege that Kirby said she believed she was just firing into the air and didn’t intend to shoot into anyone’s home. But that stray bullet found its way through a wall and struck Sorrels, killing him instantly.
“She let her anger get the best of her,” the documents state. “She did not intend to shoot at anyone’s home.”
Oklahoma City Police Master Sergeant Gary Knight told KDTV, “The bullet has to go somewhere. It went right through a wall, struck the man, and ultimately killed him.”
Kirby reportedly has a prior history involving firearms, including a previous incident where she accidentally injured herself.
She was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and is currently being held at the Oklahoma County Detention Center without bond. As of now, formal charges have not yet been filed by the District Attorney’s Office.
