Of all states, can you believe that Texas had a program in place to help pay the tuition for undocumented migrants?
The Trump DOJ has filed suit to have the plan scrapped, and it did not take long for Texas to fold up shop and grant the request to end the program.
The Program
There is a website regarding the program called Higher ED Immigration portal, that states, “Higher education in the U.S. benefits from the participation of immigrant and international students.
“First and second-generation individuals comprise 31% of all students enrolled in higher education, a growing figure that underscores the importance of immigrant-origin students in the classroom and our workforce.”
The site outlines that there are more than 1.6 million illegal immigrants in the state of Texas, as well as 146,500 DACA-eligible residents.
When this program came to the attention of the White House, it immediately sought to end it.
The suit
On Wednesday, the DOJ filed suit against Texas to end the program due to federal laws prohibiting providing benefits to illegal immigrants that are not offered to legal citizens.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “Under federal law, schools cannot provide benefits to illegal aliens that they do not provide to U.S. citizens.”
“The Justice Department will relentlessly fight to vindicate federal law and ensure that U.S. citizens are not treated like second-class citizens anywhere in the country.”
Trump’s “Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Open Borders,” ordered all agencies to “ensure, to the maximum extent permitted by law, that no taxpayer-funded benefits go to unqualified aliens.”
Texas Folds
I have to admit, I was a bit surprised to see Bondi go after Texas so aggressively when a call to the governor would have likely sufficed.
To my point, not long after the suit was filed, Texas announced that it would voluntarily end the program.
Governor Abbott posted on X, “In-state tuition for illegal immigrants in Texas has ended. Texas is permanently enjoined from providing in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.”
I am very happy that Abbott ended the program, but I would have to question how this program ever came to be in Texas and why local legislators did not end the program on their own. This just proves that slowly but surely, Texas is making a swing, and when conservatives lose Texas, we lose any hope of holding power in this government. If liberals hold Texas and California, it is game over for us.
