A Virginia nurse anesthetist has given up his medical license after shocking allegations surfaced accusing him of sexually abusing multiple sedated patients during procedures.
Kevin Coolong, who formerly worked with Atlantic Anesthesia, is accused of inappropriately touching and kissing at least four women between 2017 and 2024, according to a consent order issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing on May 30. The board concluded that Coolong “engaged in non-consensual sexual conduct with multiple female patients while they were sedated.”
The disturbing incidents involved two women undergoing orthopedic surgeries and two maternity patients. One alleged assault took place in August 2018, when Coolong reportedly fondled a woman’s breast after administering spinal sedation for a knee replacement at Sentara Leigh Hospital.
In another case, he allegedly kissed a sedated woman on the lips during a 2022 hand surgery. Coolong later told investigators that he believed she liked him, stating, “We had a pleasant interaction” and “she liked me.”
The most recent incident occurred in 2024 after a cesarean section at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Coolong allegedly placed his thumb in the patient’s mouth and stroked her cheek and lips while she was drowsy. He reportedly claimed the woman seemed “clingy” and stared at him, leading him to believe she was interested in him.
A psychosexual evaluation included in the investigation painted an even more troubling picture. According to the report, Coolong suggested the women were partly responsible for his actions, claiming they were “overly affectionate,” “asked for it by the way they looked and talked,” and “liked the sexual things that happened.”
He also allegedly told evaluators he “desperately craves love and affection beyond what is normal” and thought he could get away with the abuse because “the patients would like it.”
Coolong officially resigned on August 20, 2024, and has not commented on the allegations. His attorney also declined to speak to the press.
In response, Sentara Health issued a statement emphasizing patient safety as their top priority. “We are aware of the Virginia Board of Nursing consent order against the former Atlantic Anesthesia employee and the significant action being taken against him,” said Mike Kafka, Director of Corporate Communications. “We intend to fully cooperate with the investigation into this matter.”
