The race to become California’s next governor is taking shape, with all the major contenders glad-handing at the California Democratic Party annual convention last weekend. One big absence, however — that of Kamala Harris — loomed large over the affair, as political power brokers are still holding off on backing candidates until the former presidential candidate confirms whether she will run.
Harris, whose name alone would give her a significant edge in the already crowded race, has given herself an end-of-summer deadline to announce whether she plans to run. In the meantime, her would-be competition spent the weekend in Anaheim schmoozing with an estimated 4,000 Democratic delegates, activists, and guests. In attendance were two possible presidential hopefuls, including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ 2024 running mate, who spoke blunt words about the party’s failures to a crowd Saturday. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey also made an appearance, the Los Angeles Times reported. Harris did make a cameo in what Politico described as a “brief, pre-recorded video,” but otherwise she stayed away from the affair.
Democratic insiders say her absence is a reflection of the reality that there is no sense of urgency for Harris, who is likely still weighing her options between a governor’s run in 2026 or a presidential bid in 2028.
“She is obviously in charge of the timeline,” said Derek Humphrey, a Democratic strategist who works on various legislative and congressional campaigns. “She earned that.”
