House Republican leadership released a joint statement on Tuesday night, promising to put the White House’s proposed $9.4 billion rescission package on the chamber’s floor next week.
The White House sent the package to Congress earlier Tuesday, which would codify some of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cuts if passed. The number includes proposed cuts to wasteful foreign aid spending at the State Department and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which partially funds NPR and PBS.
House Speaker Mike Johnson released the statement in a post on X, which was made alongside House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and House Republican Chairwoman Lisa McClain.
“Now that this wasteful spending by the federal government has been identified by DOGE, quantified by the Administration, and sent to Congress, House Republicans will fulfill our mandate and continue codifying into law a more efficient federal government,” the leaders said. “This is exactly what the American people deserve.”
They added: “Next week, we will put the rescissions bill on the floor of the House and encourage all our Members to support this commonsense measure.”
The lawmakers did not specify the day that they would place the package on the House floor, but the sum reflects only a fraction of the $175 billion in estimated savings DOGE claimed to have made.
