Tom Homan, a former senior immigration official and border enforcement expert, said Monday he is convinced the U.S. will experience a major terrorist attack linked directly to immigration and border policies enacted during former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Speaking during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Homan warned that an attack on the scale of 9/11 could be carried out by migrants who illegally crossed the southern border under Biden’s watch.
Homan pointed to about 2 million migrants, often referred to as “gotaways,” who were not apprehended by Border Patrol agents during Biden’s time in office. These individuals slipped past immigration enforcement and remain unaccounted for.
He said these “gotaways” are a bigger concern to him than the ongoing drug trafficking and human smuggling problems that have long plagued the US-Mexico border.
“These 2 million known gotaways scare the hell out of me,” Homan said. He added that he fears some of these migrants may be terrorists who entered the country undetected.
Homan called for urgent efforts to locate and track down these individuals, warning, “I’m convinced something’s coming unless we can find them,” as the New York Post reported.
He expressed alarm over the fact that many migrants chose to avoid detection by paying smugglers higher fees rather than surrendering directly to Border Patrol agents, who typically process and release migrants quickly.
Homan explained that migrants who turn themselves in are usually released the same day, given work permits, and provided with a free airline ticket to a city of their choice, hotel accommodations, meals, and medical care.
“Why did 2 million illegal aliens pay more to get away?” he asked. “They could have paid half as much to cross the border legally, been released, and received all those benefits. They didn’t want to be vetted. They didn’t want to be fingerprinted. Why?”
Homan stressed that this situation should alarm every American. He cited his 40 years of experience in immigration enforcement to underscore the gravity of the problem.
He described the “gotaways” as the “biggest national security vulnerability this country’s ever seen,” predicting that the U.S. will continue to deal with the fallout from Biden’s border policies for the next decade.
Homan’s remarks followed a recent violent attack in Boulder, Colorado, where a man used a makeshift flamethrower and Molotov cocktails to injure 12 people in what authorities have labeled an antisemitic terror attack.
The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, is a 45-year-old Egyptian national who entered the United States on a tourist visa in 2022. He later sought asylum and was granted a work permit under the Biden administration.
According to officials, Soliman’s work visa expired in March of this year, rendering him out of legal status.
Homan criticized the Biden administration for issuing work permits to migrants without sufficient vetting. He accused the government of handing out visas “like they’re candy,” a practice he said undermines national security.
He said the Colorado attack demonstrates the risks of such policies and highlighted the importance of tighter immigration enforcement to prevent similar incidents in the future.
