Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, the Australian mother charged with the brutal stabbing death of her 3-year-old daughter, has died just days after her arrest.
The 32-year-old was found unresponsive in her cell at Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre on Friday, May 30, and was rushed to a local hospital’s intensive care unit. Despite efforts to save her, Flanigan died on the evening of Sunday, June 1, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
Queensland Correctional Service confirmed the death and said an investigation is underway. “Support is being offered to the responding officers and their colleagues,” the department stated, adding that a report will be prepared for the coroner.
Flanigan was facing charges for the shocking May 26 killing of her daughter, Sophia Rose, outside their home in Moore Park Beach, Central Queensland. Authorities say the child was found with fatal stab wounds in the front yard, and despite multiple attempts to revive her, she was declared dead at the scene.
Two other children, aged 1 and 2, were also in the home at the time of the incident but were unharmed. They are now in the care of relatives.
“There’s no doubt it was a horrific scene,” Queensland Police Superintendent Brad Inskip told 7 News. “It’s a terrible, terrible incident for everybody — including the witnesses, the neighbors, and the first responders.”
A knife believed to be the murder weapon was recovered at the scene. Flanigan was arrested and charged soon after.
Adding another chilling layer to the case, Flanigan had allegedly posted a series of disturbing messages online in the days leading up to the killing. According to Sky News Australia and News.com.au, she shared lyrics from the heavy metal band Disturbed, including lines like, “Another nightmare about to come true. Will manifest tomorrow.” She also posted cryptic references to past trauma, calling her children “my divine babies” and writing about being a “warrior of light” who trains “like it’s war.”
In one particularly haunting post, she allegedly captioned a video showing a woman with bruises: “Remember your pain as it fuels your purpose.”
